Anyone of you yahoos replaced the inline fuel filter? Any tricks that I should know about? Mine lines going in and out look pretty rusty :(

Soak it with PB blaster and make sure you have new rubber O-rings also. My fuel filter didn't come with them and they most likely will need replacing. Stupid that they don't include it with the filter.

Use flare nut wrenches, don't attempt removing with open end.
Use Never Seez on the fittings when reinstalling.

The filter is mounted to the outside of the chassis just forward of the right rear wheel.

A lot of people, when they mess up the fittings, cut off the rubber line and fit new rubber lines and just use an inline filter with push-on ends.
Be careful if you go that route. The OE filter is a 4 micron filter and all the filters I've looked at with push on fittings are 20-150 micron. I found one with 1/2" push-on fittings that filters down to 10 microns. Obviously I haven't checked every filter on the market.

There is a BMW 7 series filter that is about 50% longer than the Discovery filter, has push on ends, and has the same outside diameter so it fits in the factory bracket. Also made by MANN, the Land Rover OEM filter supplier. Unfortunately I do not know the part number off hand.

I think its the WIX 33272, which has a 10 micron rating for your concerns

Or it could be a Mahle KL35, not 100% sure. This is a random piece of knowledge I acquired about 9 years ago and never wrote down.

Whenever I change a fuel filter, I let the vehicle sit over the weekend. This is easy since I've got two vehicles and know how to do the "puppy eyes" on my g/f to make her drive.

Outside of your "bumming a ride skills", I've found that over a few days, the fuel system kinda de-pressurizes. This helps prevent the "gasoline in eyes" event. Also seems to help reduce the amount of gasoline that gets sprayed all over the place.

X2 on flare wrenches. Also wear rubber gloves and try to cover your arms. Will prevent the irritation gasoline causes.

That is all I gots. On a D1 the fuel filter is extremely easy to get to. Maybe remove a wheel to get to it better? Can't remember. Sounds about right.

A quicker solution, with the vehicle running pull out the fuel pump relay from the underhood fuse box. The fuel pump will stop, and the engine will starve the fuel system and shut down. Once the engine dies, turn off the key, change the fuel filter, pop the relay back in, and turn the key on. The fuel pump will pressurize the system and it will fire right up.

Alright this thread was all for not, as I figured out that I can just do away with the whole inline filter anyway.
What I failed to mention was that I'm running a Diesel Mec OM617 in my Landy which uses the spin on fuel filter at the motor.
So by by inline filter, it was really restricting my flow and its not a great filter for diesels anyway.
Thanks

I installed this one last weekend, was recommended by Amazon. I can't find much info on it now that I am looking though:

I'm sure it's 4 micron as well. But you're right, Mann's web site leaves a lot to be desired.

Ha. Yeah, I'm surprised you haven't had any issues with it getting blocked in the winter.
