What would you do

Here is the situation, my 99 D1 has developed the dreaded engine knock that is a slipping liner. A little back story on the vehicle, I have owned it twice, I originally bought it in 2004 from the Land Rover dealership that I was working at and drove it for a few years and then sold it. Many years later I was browsing the local car ads and noticed a Disco that had a very similar appearance to my old D1. I loved the truck and always regretted selling it so I went to take a look and sure enough it was my old D1, it had been badly mistreated by its owners and was in need of some TLC. I made the guy a low ball offer and he took it.

The biggest issue that it had when I bought it was that it was overheating due to a bad t-stat. The thermostat was an easy fix but the previous owner had driven it while it was overheating and had caused a liner to slip. It would bang like crazy when the engine got hot but wouldnt use coolant and once the thermostat was replaced it never overheated. I drove it like that for almost a year and then decided that it was time to replace the block. I sourced a good used block and then gathered all the components to build up a 4.6 to put it in. I swapped the engines and was very happy with the way it ran and overall was getting the Rover back to the condition I wanted it. I spent a lot of time fixing rust on the rear cargo area floor, repairing water leaks from the windshield and rear alpine windows, sandblasted the frame and repainted it ect ect.

About a month ago I loaded up the D1 to go camping and made it about 15 miles, we pulled over to grab some drivethrough and when I rolled down the windows I heard the dreaded knocking noise again.... I lifted the hood and the expansion tank was ballooned up and leaking a little coolant. Damn it.

So now I am back where I was to begin with, I dont know if the block I used wasnt in as good as condition as I was told it was, or if I am just unlucky. But now I need to decide, do I spend the time and money to replace the block again. Or do I sell it as it and give up on my Rover?

What would you do?

What kind of budget are you working with? That is the biggest question.

You can do a full 300Tdi/R380 swap for about $5k and increase the truck's value by about the same so long as its in good condition.

I don't have unlimited funds, but what I am thinking is I would budget the amount that I would lose if I sold the vehicle as it versus in running condition, which I think would be about 1500

Did you pressure test the block before installation?
If you do pull it, I'd pressure test it just to make sure it's really what you think. Could also be cracked.
Also make sure your radiator isn't clogged, if you haven't already. The failed thermostat may not have been the only cooling system issue.

Is it just knocking and that is it?

****** it. Run it. My buddies D2 has been knocking for years. It is making the same noises as before and its running fine.

In the meantime, you can enjoy your truck and save up. X2 on having a local machine shop do the work. They will know what they are doing and do it for a reasonable price.

If you can get the coolant tank under control just run it. My D1 has been ticking for years. I replaced lifters, rockers, camshaft, and so on. It still ticks. I'll run it till it explodes.

I never did pressure test the block, I know I should have, but that does me little good at this point haha

I ran a bottle of k seal through the coolant system to see if it would stop the overpressurising and so far it has, but I don't trust that it will hold. I did check to see if the radiator was blocked and it doesn't appear to be.

Thanks for the heads up on the 4.6, I will call him tomorrow

Seems you really like this truck so I'd suggest fixing it if necessary. We had a Range Rover Classic that had a small coolant leak and we used a bottle of Bars leak. It fixed the problem. If the 4.6 falls through, try Will Tillery or Paul Grant. I think Paul is currently parting out a 1998 D1.

take ur radiator out , go buy muriatic acid from pool supply store mix it with 20% of water , fill it up inside ur radiator , wait 5 min flash it out ,do it again , and u can have almost new condition radiator ,

whenn i got my old classic it was over heating like there is no tomorrow , it was bad radiator someone told me to do the same , and after that i was amazed how cool truck run,

first do the less expensive tests ,

radiator , fun clutch , pressure test, the the most important for the rover system, ( the tiny thin hose that goes from the radiator to expansion tank ) when thats blocked it will make ur truck to over heat ,
