Our first trip to Point Sublime, GCNP North Rim

We were only a few miles out of camp when I saw the head sticking up above the pine needles. Now mind you, I am wicked bad red/green colorblind. So bad that when I was trying for an airborne school slot, the LTC thought I would not know the color difference of the lights at the jump door. Thankfully, my 1st SGT had me pick out a red lense from the flashlight as "proof" I could tell the difference in colors, and off to Benning I went. So what does that mean? Well, being red/green color bling means that camo does not work on me. Animals that blend in to everyone else, stick out like neon signs to me...same with human created camo patterns too....they simply do not work with my eyes. Great for hunting, not so great for teaching your kids their colors.

Awesome report. Thanks for sharing. I would love to make it to the North Rim at some point. I've only been to the South Rim.

The above quote is awesome in a way. It's almost like you have super powers. I'm surprised you haven't been recruited into some top secret spec ops organization as some sort of spotter because man made camouflage doesn't work on you. J/K

The "top secret spec ops organization" was called "Point" when we were doing movement to contact against OPFOR.

I can't wait to get back to that area, not just the Rim, but the whole Kaibab NF. In Flag, you always hear how different the KNF is, but until you see it, you don't really get the scope of how different it really is.

I'm a bit jaded in the fact that I grew up in Flag, and a trip to the South Rim was almost a requirement of every school class I was in. After that, I spent two years working on various different projects up there for Xanterra as well as the NPS, from small housing remodels, to remodeling the El Tovar to a new theatre complex for the park. I got tired of the drive and the hassle of operating in the park, to the detriment of enjoying the views.

The North Rim on the other hand is something else entirely!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words too.

I can understand being jaded, using the Disneyland analogy literally, I grew up in San Diego and was in a band. We went to Disneyland at least once a year to play and after awhile going to Disneyland was no big deal anymore.

Going to the North Rim is a little bit more of a commitment to get there (which is a good thing IMO) going to the South Rim is barely a small detour. My first trip to the Canyon was to the North Rim and I prefer it as well.

Also meant to comment on the pics of the kitty kat on my first post, I have yet to see one here and in 25 years in Colorado I have seen only 1 bobcat and 1 lynx. Nice pics, well done Fergie.
