Help me with Gen 2 option matrix

I'm looking for another Montero to add to the stable, and though I prefer the Gen 1 body style, the four door versions are hard to come by in the PNW; besides, I like the equipment on the Gen 2 better! (Don't like the Gen 2.5 bodies, so I've narrowed my choices to the Gen 2.)

I'm a little confused, though, on what options were available in the Gen 2. I don't want the DOHC engine (in fact, I'd really prefer the 3.0l engine), but I do want the winter package with the locker. Was that package available in the U.S. with anything other than the DOHC engine?

I believe you can't buy an SR(later called the winter package in the gen 2.5) with the 3.0 engine unless you stick with a 92-93.

If u just want a locker you can always swap one in from a 94-96/97 SR (not 100% sure if the 97 is badged as an SR or if the gear ratio is 4.6x:1 matching the earlier gen 1 v6 or 92-93 SR ratio. The later 98-00 gen 2.5's though have 4.2:1 ratios so avoid them if you try and swap in a rear end locker.

Or if u don't already have a gen 1, then the 92-93 SR's have the smaller rear diff with a locker and the 3.0 v6 instead of a DOHC engine.

I've been told that mine doesn't exist, but I owned a 94 LS with the rear locker. It had the Chrysler 3.0L motor

I know some dealers ordered lockers for their clients on the LS models. Isn't the 94 Chrysler 3.0L motor built by Mitsubishi? Was there any difference in them?

Well I'm not sure who made the motor, but in my experience, the parts where interchangeable, and Mitsu parts were 2x more money than Chrysler parts, and often had to be ordered, whereas the local auto parts store seemed to keep the Chrysler version in stock, cheap.

Stupid question, but why are you gunning for the 3.0L so hard? I thought both required about the same maintenance.

"Gunning so hard"? Not sure what gave you that impression; I just have a preference if given a choice. Just as long as it's not the DOHC !

Even with the extra maintenance, the additional power of the 3.5 is VERY NICE! 214hp vs 177hp is not insignificant both on and off road.

Also the additional maintenance is every 100k+, not every 20-50k. Not saying the 3.5L is the right motor for you but just trying to put your concerns in proper perspective.

The 1997 has 200 HP. I don't understand the maintenance part of your statement. Please explain.

Having owned a 3.5L and the 3.0L, I totally agree with Off-Roader that the extra hp and torque is noticeable and much appreciated.

I'm saying the cost for maintenance is more but because the extra cost is only incurred every 100k miles or so, its worth a few hundred dollars for the extra HP especially when I'm running the bigger n heavier tires and am admittedly like to accelerate quickly.

Also didn't realize they upped the HP in the later 3.0's, but I was basing my comments on the mention of the 92/93 models SR's.

Gen 2

Hello, I have a Gen 2 and wouldn't trade it for nothing. Yes, mechanics don't like to work on the DOHC, but its reliable I do preventative maintenance with no problems. As stated earlier at 100,000 miles the severe service is due. I did mine in the beginning of this year after 19 years. Not bad for 19 years in my humble opinion. Never stranded nor any break downs (knock on wood)......

Good luck Sir!
