Help me with Gen 2 option matrix

I'm looking for another Montero to add to the stable, and though I prefer the Gen 1 body style, the four door versions are hard to come by in the PNW; besides, I like the equipment on the Gen 2 better! (Don't like the Gen 2.5 bodies, so I've narrowed my choices to the Gen 2.)

I'm a little confused, though, on what options were available in the Gen 2. I don't want the DOHC engine (in fact, I'd really prefer the 3.0l engine), but I do want the winter package with the locker. Was that package available in the U.S. with anything other than the DOHC engine?

I too like the first gen body style but the gen II/II.5 make much better daily drivers. I owned a very nice 1991 4 door gen I and it was a good around town vehicle but it was down right miserable for rides over 50 miles. My 2000 gen II.5 was not only good around town, it was comfortable for hours on end. The gen II.5 did have more power but it also was significantly more heavy. Personally I love that first gen look. To my knowledge only 3 SUV's have ever had the tall, boxy look like the gen I Montero. The other two were gen I Trooper and the Mercedes G-wagon. If these vehicles are not an option the next best thing would be a nice gen II Montero.

Nope, I left that one out on purpose, it's too short and it is rounded at the corners. If you include the Defender then you would have to include the Original Bronco, Jeep, Landcruiser etc. etc. It's not to say that the Defender is not a fantastic vehicle, because it is, but it lacks the proportions and crisp lines on that first gen Montero.

I don't know, the Defender cir 90s was only barely rounded on the front corners. I'd consider it rather boxy, more than early LCs. EBs are pretty damn cool, IMO. You are right in that the list of "nearly boxy" expands the selection. In the end, none are the value of the Montero in terms of price vs. what you get.
