ExPo's opinion? new Xterra or CC Frontier.

Ive been slowly shopping for a new car. I wantex something that would be a good camping rig. I've slowly narrowed it down to the xterra, a CC frontier, or possibly an FJ. The FJ is likely out, as its much more pricey.

So I'm really not sure between the fronty and the xterra. Either will likely be Pro4x, and are about the same price. I like the bed on the fronty, but ill likely put a topper on it to carry boats and keep my gear dry.

Anyone have any opinions that may sway me? I'd like to find used, but the deals on new right now are really good, so i have a lot of choices....which is part of the problem.

Basically comes down to whether you want a truck or an SUV.

Mechanically easentially identical, if you think the open bed will benefit then go frontier, or if you think you would like an enclosed vehicle I'd go Xterra.

Frontier with a long bed and topper will net you more storage, and I think that the Xterra back seats have more room than the frontier, but could be wrong.

I don't know what kind of terrain you travel but don't forget to consider breakover angles because of difference in wheelbase length. The longer wheelbase Fronty will be easier to high-center.

Well, I'm a little biased, but here's why I think the CC/SB Frontier is a better option:

*The CC/SB Frontier has way more storage space. Like a lot more. With a topper you have vastly more dry storage than you would with an X.

*Yes, the wheelbase is longer, but not by that much. With a modest amount of lift amd 33's, there isn't that much that would give you problems until you got to hardcore rock crawling.

* That longer wheelbase will be nice if you tow anything.

*The rear leg room is actually pretty nice.

Otherwise, they're nearly the same vehicle. Both share that awesomely smooth 4.0, they look similar (I think the Frontier is better looking by a thin margin) they have similar interiors, similar transmissions, both Pro-4x versions come with a locker, all that.

Now, the Xterra will always have better aftermarket support. That being said, the aftermarket for the Frontier isn't bad at all, with several options for everything.

Oh, and my other big plus for the Frontier: it's really underrated. Everybody raves about the Xterra, and often the Fronty gets overlooked. Same thing when compared with the Tacoma. I actually think it's better than a Tacoma. So it's a bit of an underdog. Underrated and overlooked. Which makes it a bit more unique. And THAT makes it cool.

Just one man's opinion.

We had an 06 Xterra OR and loved it. We talk about buying another all the time.

Like stated above, since their basically the same vehicle it all boils down to if you want a truck or not. Consider carefully what you will be doing with it, make a list and go for it.

Whats the price of a fronty/x pro-4x? I paid 28k for a new fj with locker.

I can get a pro4x xterra/fronty here for about 27...possibly lower if they'll play ball. The FJs seem to run about 31, and I cant get them to come down any. Also looked at Tacos, bit they will not budge a cent on those, and to me, it seema like you get a lot more for your money with thr frontier. Though, I do think the Taco has a nicer interior....the frontier is better everywhere else.

I was in the same boat after my Montero died, and settled on the 2011 Xterra. I was set on the PRO-4X model either way but with 2 growing boys and dogs, the livable space of the X sold me on it. That and I could get into it cheaper than the Frontier. The Frontier may have more overall space, but the PRO model only comes with a short bed and I wasn't going to put a top on the bed. My $0.02

Depends on how technical the wheeling you plan on doing is, the bed is really really nice to throw dirty/large items in without worry of becoming a projectile or soiling your interior. The break over angle is a bit worse, but it's still a *small* truck, so as TheFastLaneCar said, it's basically the truck jeep would build if they could. Both are highly capable, stout, and on a smaller Titan frame iirc, meaning they're quite strong. It doesn't help for me to say this, but go with either and you won't make a bad choice :) Look at some of the excellent builds on here and decide which looks better to you. My vote is for the frontier

Well....

Purchased a fronty. It's not the 4x but I got a heck of a deal. 4x4 in SV trim. In the end, I think it'll go everywhere I plan on going for the near future, and I can always add stuff later on. I'm not planning on a lot of modifying to start off with, but will probably put my roof rack on so I can haul the kayaks around. Other than that, I plan on going camping :sombrero:

It was already dark when we left the dealer, so pics in the morning!

Get the Xterra, then mod the hell out of it! God knows that the ARB catalog is packed full of goodies!

Wife and I went to breakfast this morning, and took the long way home...so it's a little dirty already.

Also ran into our first angry land owner. Turns out the through road was no longer a through road. Guess the map needs changed? I think that may be our biggest problem, living in Texas. Not a whole lot of places to go play...

Not sure what my first changes will be, but I'm already dreaming of bumpers and winches and skidplates/rocksliders, etc. We'll have to see what the budget and the accountant (wife) allow.

I do miss my little car a little already though. Wish I hadn't traded it in. Good bye old friend...
