Tacoma TRD Pro driven

Over-all average seems to be around 16...not great, but it is a lot more truck than Tacoma, can configure to nearly a 2000 lbs, payload. Buddy of mine new F150 averages 20 mpg's in his RCLB with the 5.0. It is bone stock.

Crap. Best my 10 dcsb has done is 17.3. 2500 mile avg is 16.28. Something's amiss...

That is the problem with taking averages over such a large swath of vehicles...everyone's personal numbers are going to be different...like my buddy's F150...he gets an honest 20 mpg...I average 17.5 in my Taco...and I baby it.

It does make person think...why am I driving a small truck if I can get a full-size that gets better mileage.

I like F150s a lot. I'm not saying they aren't awesome. I'm just saying fuelly shows they get 20% worse fuel economy than a tacoma.

Sometimes more is more and sometimes is more is less.

I would strongly consider the new F150 in the future.

I get what you're saying. Didn't think you were slamming the F150.

You're better at numbers than me, how much "more of a truck" overall is the F150 over the Tacoma...20%, 30%+? combine...power, capacity, larger size into a general percentage of "more truck"

If they get 20% worse mileage...is the truck 20%, 30%, 40% "more"... if that makes any sense?

Funny you should put it that way... After a ride in my coworkers ecoboost lariat yesterday, I said almost the exact same thing to my wife.... Since she pushed me into the current Tacoma (from an 04), she wasn't happy to hear that logic. But to your point, its hard to argue!

After driving an EcoBoost...the argument gets even harder. ;) Heck, the 5.0 is more than enough for my needs, I am used to underpowered Toyotas...the V8's feel like rocketships!

My good dirtbike riding buddy has a '07 Silverado 5.3, extra cab, 8' bed...he fetches 18 HWY, I think to myself...I love my Tacoma and all, but what am I doing? I can get a stripped down domestic with more power, more room, more capacity...for darn near the same price as a Tacoma.

So being a long time Toyota owner, going on 25 year now...the next logical step is the Tundra...it is a nice truck and all, think I like the GM and Ford better...I dunno, there is something about the Dodges err now Rams I never liked...the current gen looks good tho'. Body style is decent, the EcoDiesel numbers look good both in power and efficiency...linked rear suspension, the interiors finally got away from the old man look.

Geez and the Taco still has drum rear brakes among other short comings. Seems like Toyota are more about their Hybrids than investing in their trucks anymore.

The drums bug me. Shouldn't, but they do. I think you're onto something critical - value. We're paying a premium for the badge, but there are other vehicles that (may) offer more value. I've owned 3 fords in my life, and about 50 Toyotas. But I'm not sure I could legitimately buy a new toy when compared - objectively - to the 150. My coworkers lariat cost the same as a high end Tacoma (after incentives). But... What would I replace my wife's 4runner with? That's the bigger challenge.

I've owned 5 tundra's. Three 1st gen, 2 second. I'm not sure they compare to the 150... I hate saying that...

One thing to keep in mind regarding the fuelly chart is that most Tacoma's I see are bone stock running the stock p rated tires towing or hauling nothing. Most F150's are hauling crap or towing trailers. They're work trucks and get put to more heavy duty use. Tacoma's are more pedestrian, so it doesn't surprise me that the reported mixed use MPG is better. Two guys I know with F150 and Tacoma say that the Ford gets better mileage (similar usage). Whatever that's worth.

Lowrange Offroad has a rear disc conversion for like $350, not bad I don't think...still it should come with discs from the factory...it is 2014 for cripes sake! :)

I really like my Tacoma, it is great for tooling around town, and light duty hauling, I do find it a joy to drive[...however it runs out of space and power real quick when we load up all the camping gear and dirt bikes plus gear goes along for them for a trip. That is when I get irritated with it....then I get the thoughts in my mind I just mentioned...I can more truck for roughly the same as a Tacoma...is it worth paying the Toyota tax?

I dunno....Toyota needs to step up their game...if Ford tosses a diesel in the new F150, be real hard to stay with Toyota.

Good point, didn't even think of the that.

The first sentence above is the biggest assumption I've ever heard, and the third sentence is most anecdotal bit of information I have ever heard.

Tell me how many miles your two guys have in their trucks and I'll add it to the 27 million miles of data above.

Don't F150s come stock with P rated tires?

What is the percentage of fleet sales of the F150's? Isn't that how they keep the "Best selling Truck" status?

One other thought (from a Toyota guy, I admit) Build Quality - my Taco has over 200k miles is tight, runs great and I would drive anywhere in it.... "most" of my Ford and Dodge friends have sold their trucks well before that mileage due to so many issues... Again, if I switched out every couple years, more MPG over longevity would be important to me... but for now my 12 and 21 year old Toyotas are doing everything I want and I plan to keep both for another 4-8 years (fingers crossed)
