How to choose the correct winch for a Gen 2?

I really like the stealth winch installs on these trucks, where the winch is installed between the frame rails and a small section of the factory front bumper is cut out, leaving a mostly-factory appearance.

Can anyone point me to some models of winches they have used for this kind of application?

It will be my first winch, and I have been doing plenty of reading on them... but can't find a lot of info for winches on our trucks.

Thanks!

Any winch with a non-integrated solenoid will work for a stealth install, the rest you can figure out on your own via Google.

This guy used a "Warn M8000 series" to do his hide-a-winch on a second gen Montero/Pajero: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=100440&start=0&sid=6a0e28ad79bc24dea66ead200e350914

They also make that Runva in an 11k version w/ a separate solenoid pack. It's a flashy kit with a bunch of stuff, but I'd be leery when they don't even describe it correctly. At only 22ft/min freespooling, its also painfully slow. You'll probably enjoy a decent 8 or 9k winch with more line speed more.
Size wise, all the planetary winches under 10k are about the same. 9k is plenty for a Montero- worked fine on my Bronco.

My warn M8000 is very slim and would easily fit between the frame rails and underneath the bumper on the montero.

Thanks guys!

What about springs and shocks? Would it be sufficient to use slightly stiffer shocks (like KYB MonoMax's)... ? Or do I need stiffer springs as well, if I install a winch (with the stock front bumper) ?

There are no springs in the front, only torsion bars. As long as your shocks are not blown you will be just fine, the stock shocks are kyb and some of us have removed them at 150k miles when they still worked well.
