97 Montero LS Transmission question

Went to make a 3-point turn today and as I change from "R" to "D" it doesn't engage to go forward...it just revs. The low gears 1-2 work, it's an AUTO btw. It hasn't been slipping or whining it's been great and my miles are fairly low. Before I throw money at it can anybody else chime in if they've had a like issue. Im gonna start with a TCM/TCU.

I have a 1997 SR with the auto tranny. I can't say I've ever experienced this with my rig. I might be wrong about this but I was pretty sure the shifter is mechanical as opposed to electronic. Is there any "play" in the shifter?

Yes there is play, it's weird because this morning it works again??? It might be a long shot, but im gonna start by checking the transmission cooler lines as we are in the middle of a heatwave.
