Getting High And, I Brought my Daughter...

Yep, my daughter and I both got high for roughly two weeks in Colorado. I know that marijuna is legal in Colorado but the purpose of this trip was to see my family and spend a little quality time with my daughter, Lilly. We were high...we spent roughly 2 weeks at altitudes between 7-13,000 feet. Colorado is a magical place for access and beauty up in the high, alpine terrain. Make an effort if you haven't; you won't be disappointed.

The drive from Utah into Colorado is uneventful. We made good time and stopped at a favorite place of mine...Maybell, Colorado. General stores likes this are hard to find anymore. When you see one; pull over and pay a little extra for something to keep the place alive. It would be our little theme on this trip.

Camp was quickly setup outside Steamboat Springs. Lilly reading a few words before bed.

june15.jpg

"The Boat" as a lot of locals call it is an awesome place to spend a few days. We have been fortunate enough to have spent a great deal of time in Steamboat already. So, off we went...We threw in a few flies first.

june12.jpg

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL SEE MY DAUGHTER IN A PINK TUTU IN A LOT OF THESE PICTURES. SHE HAS 3 OR 4 OF THE SAME TUTU. I DO WASH THEM!

Starting to get high...

june13.jpg

We were off to see the Rabbit's Ears that make this mountain pass on highway 40 famous. Our plan was to hike up to them. Unfortunately, snow stopped our progress.

june14.jpg

Just in the distance...

june16.jpg

Now, time wasn't on our side. My mother was waiting for us in Keystone/Breckenridge. But, we stopped and fished a little more...

june17.jpg

Lilly trying to pick out the "winner". Unfortunately, the dry fly action wasn't good. Or, more than likely it was us! My wife is a former guide...she knows this fly and that fly...I, on the other hand, no **** about flies. They all look good to me!

june18.jpg

The storms of the high country are simply awesome! We were about to get one...

june19.jpg

More to come...

We arrived safe and sound at my mother's place...The days were spent relaxing and exploring the area around Keystone/Breckenridge/Dillion area.

Lilly loves to bike...rain or shine. The weather closing in...

june20.jpg

Lilly even found her sisters.

june2.jpg

We headed south...getting high! We traveled up to Boreas Pass. It was gorgeous out! The pass once had a rail line running up and over...It was later replaced with a road bed for overlanders like us:)

june4.jpg

june5.jpg

june6.jpg

Signs of the old rail line were everywhere. This restored Water Tower was neat to see.

june3.jpg

Over the river and through the woods...The high country roads of Colorado are outstanding!

june7.jpg

Not all overlanders need Land Cruisers, Land Rovers, Earthroamers, etc. What about this? It's expo white!

june8.jpg

We found a nice place to camp. Just in time for happy hour.

june9.jpg

Stream-side lodging for this evening. The rush of the water was close but put us to sleep...

june10.jpg

More to come...

With really no schedule in mind...We just kind of did what we wanted...Not one thing pressing! On one day's adventure; we hung out on the rock.

june3.jpg

My brother, Rob, trying to get to the top!

june2.jpg

Another day...Lilly just jumped for joy!

june5.jpg

The fam...

june4.jpg

Our travels continued to take us to the high country. We hiked, photographed, and wandered around the old mining cities. It was neat.

june6.jpg

june9.jpg

Our travels were very relaxing...No schedule in mind!

june10.jpg

june8.jpg

And, yes we decided to throw in the fly numerous times!

june1.jpg

Lilly's dressed had been washed a few times by now:) She was captivated by the history...

More to come...

one trail at a time
I'll be staying in Breckenridge. Was going to stay in Estes park so I got the northern Colorado 4x4 maps book, I'm going to order the Colorado book. Hoping to find some good (easy) trails, abandoned mines and ghost town around Breckenridge.

Enjoy the time with your daughter while you can, they grow up fast and don't seem to have time for adventures like this too often.

Yeah, I feel pretty fortunate that I have some time that we can spend together. She doesn't seem to mind now...But, I know it's coming. She and I will enjoy it while we can:)

Epic father-daughter adventure! Well done, dad!

Colorado has its roots in ranching and mining and it's still evident today if you look. We traveled by a "horse whisperer" doing her work...

june1.jpg

Lilly was looking for horses, mines, or really anything that caught her attention:)

june10.jpg

Getting up in the high country, we came across this Bristlecone Pine forest. Awesome! Some of the trees are 1,000+ years old.

june2.jpg

Lilly working on her form...It's coming along nicely.

june7.jpg

I packed up camp. We went looking for more mining relics of glory days past.

june9.jpg

june11.jpg

We found so many signs of Colorado's past mining glory. It was nice to see that the counties were rebuilding/restoring some of the buildings. Tourist dollars talk:)

june5.jpg

Our night's camp was at 11,000 feet. It was gorgeous!

june6.jpg

Happy Hour Called!

june8.jpg

Time to get wet...More to come.
