92 SR and 99 Sport axle parts interchangeable?

So I found an axle out of a '92 SR with 4.875 (we call them 4.88 gears in the rest of the world outside of mitsubishi) and a locker at my local pick - n - pull for $150. Took it home with me, chopped off the brackets as it was going under my '93 jeep wrangler.

Fast forward a few months and from the same PNP I find a 99 Montero Sport with a locker (I know right, a unicorn...) so for another $150 and 2 hrs of time that one also followed me home. It has the wrong gear ratio but it is my understanding that everything will interchange between the 2 axles right? I only ask because a few weeks of research has given me some conflicting info. The 99 Sport axle is in better shape than the SR axle. Has anyone here actually swapped pumpkins/3rd members between the two axles, because I have found lots of "theory" but dang little actual "idunnit application.

I have done swaps in the past where everything seemed to fit fine only to let the magic smoke out shortly after.

If the '99 had a 3.5 no, just count the bolts on the 3rd member. If they are the same it goes, if not it doesn't.

As Toasty mentioned if both are the 3.0 engine they should both use the smaller axle housing, if the Sport has the larger 3.5 engine and 9.5 inch housing then it will not.

Well, it had a 3.5, but it has 10 bolts just like the 92. I guess I'll take lots of pics and post up what I discover...
It amazes me how many permutations Mitsu used in these axles. I thought jeep was bad.

You're fine then, it's just a matter of putting it together. There are only 3 Mitsu truck rear axles in various different configurations available stateside and you definitely don't have the 8" so that leaves you with just 2 possible rears. I could see them putting a 9" behind a 3.5 in a Sport, lighter rig lighter axle. The "rules" don't always apply with Mitsu.

So I'm finding out.
I had some one tell me that a 99 sport never came with a locker, but there it is. My wife wanted to know why I needed 2 axles with lockers, then I showed her what replacement parts cost, then what an ARB costs. Now I'm a hero for being ahead of the curve. Looking to perhaps rebuild the SR axle into a front axle later in the year after I get a garage built. This whole working outside in gravel sucks, especially when it is -25* F or blowing so hard I can't even weld with flux core in my mig, or raining...

According to car-part the '99 Sport had an optional locker with the 3.0l and 4x4 (4.63 or 4.27 ratio) but only a rear locker in the 3.5l in the 4x2 (4.22 ratio). Perhaps the 4x2 with the 3.5l uses a 9"?

It was definitely a 4x4 with a 3.5l engine as I also got parts off of it for my wife's 2001.
It has the 4.63 ratio.
I was scratching my head when I found it because it was so far outside "normal" stuff. so either some one swapped a buncha stuff or Mitsu strikes again.

The one i bought was from a 1999 Sport with a 3.5 and a locker, the awesome thing about running the Mitsu axle modified asa front axle is that you can run any outers (toyota, Chevy or Dana) and have readily available axle shafts. It's a great combo.

I figure with 37" tires I needed a bit more beef and grunt than the 4.10 D44/AMC20 I swapped in from a Waggy.

Now if it would quit raining for 10 min...

In case anyone was wondering here are some comparison pics of a D44 vs a Mitsubishi 9" gear. Not hard to see why I wanted one of these in my Jeep...
