So I found an axle out of a '92 SR with 4.875 (we call them 4.88 gears in the rest of the world outside of mitsubishi) and a locker at my local pick - n - pull for $150. Took it home with me, chopped off the brackets as it was going under my '93 jeep wrangler.
Fast forward a few months and from the same PNP I find a 99 Montero Sport with a locker (I know right, a unicorn...) so for another $150 and 2 hrs of time that one also followed me home. It has the wrong gear ratio but it is my understanding that everything will interchange between the 2 axles right? I only ask because a few weeks of research has given me some conflicting info. The 99 Sport axle is in better shape than the SR axle. Has anyone here actually swapped pumpkins/3rd members between the two axles, because I have found lots of "theory" but dang little actual "idunnit application.
I have done swaps in the past where everything seemed to fit fine only to let the magic smoke out shortly after.
