Rolled Montero - Runs Last Chance Cayon The Next Morning

Hi Guys,
I'm not a Montero owner, but I really like them a lot. I have two videos you might want to see. Two weeks ago I went out with a few friends to the El Paso Mountains in the Mojave. We planed on camping out, exploring the historic area and running Last Chance Canyon the next morning. Well after a great bonfire and BBQ I was going to call it a night, my 8 year old son had already headed to the tent. At that point two of my friends decided to go for a late night drive in the 2nd gen Montero. About an hour later I heard yelling down the road, and my two friends came walking back into the camp. They were driving down the canyon, and an unlit quad came out of a blind corner. The guy only had one of those little led lights on the top of his helmet. My friend decided to save the guys life, and swerve off the fire road. They were going a little fast, and when all the dust settled, the Montero was on its side. Below is a video of the late night recovery. This truck is really impressive, aside from cosmetic damage, it was totally drivable. As a testament to the tank like characteristics of the Montero, he ran Last Chance Canyon the next morning! Now we have a guy in our group seriously thinking about buying a 2nd or 3rd gen Monte.

Recovery: (There is a little profanity by the guy holding the camera)

Cool beans, I rolled my first Jeep on the driver side the day before Thanksgiving 1999 while playing a bit too much in the snow, took about an hour to get it back on its wheels and drove great until I sold it 3 years ago. As for the atv's flying around corners and running into things, happens all too often, Memorial Day 2000 I had to drag one down a trail after it ran head-on into a vehicle and its owner was loaded onto life flight.

cool. What did you guys do with the oil spills?

I'd like to say we got everything cleaned up, but that's probably not the case. After we righted the truck, we went back to camp and went to sleep. The next morning we came back with daylight and collected as much debris as we could. We also shoveled about a gallon of the contaminated dirt into a trashbag.

I rolled my first car, a '95 Montero SR, onto the driver's side. Once it was back on all four wheels, it fired right up and I drove it for another year or so until it blew a head gasket. That's exactly why I'm back in the fold. These rigs are tough.

My gen 2.5 got t-boned at about 45 mph a bit over a year ago. Center of impact was right about where the Driver's B pillar hits the floor. spun me around 180 degrees (rear went airborn) then the passenger rear hit a stop sign and snapped in half the 4x4 post holding the sign. Dented the frame rail but seemingly didn't bend it.

The truck still ran and drove fine. The truck was totaled, after one glance, by insurance agent. A few months later I got the driver door open with the help of a 3 foot crow bar and used a five pound mallet in a crude attempt to bring doors back into alignment. Haven't written much about the truck since, but I still drive the truck regularly. Last March it supported us on a 4 day White Rim mountain bike trip. The driver's window only opens an inch due to the "reshaping" of the door (but it still works!!) and the door seals don't line up well so it is a bit noisy/dusty but aside from that I'd drive it anywhere.

I have many friends who work in Emergency Medicine. Among them they ski/mountain bike/mountain climb/base jump/wing suit fly etc., these are people who, themselves, love adventure. At work they have seen pretty much any injury recreational Utah can provide. The one patient population that they all speak of, with fear and sadness, is the ATV injuries. Well, and to be fair, motorcycles too. Be aware out there.

Once again, I'm not surprised by the ability of these trucks to take abuse.

John B.

They are very capable off road too. Removing the stock bumper really seemed to increase the approach angle and overall capability of the rig in rough terrain. Last Chance Canyon is fairly difficult, and the Montero went through entirely unassisted.
