I've searched build threads and photo galleries and I have not found anyone that has mounted a longer hardshell RTT on a short bed topper.
I have an Autohome Columbus mounted on an 84x56" Rhino rack Pioneer Platform. It's currently on my 100 series LC. I want to mount the combination on my 5'7" topper that has Yakima tracks installed. I plan on using 4 legs and have secured all the appropriate hardware to make it all work. I'm second guessing my plan and would like some advice.
Take a look at the image below. This is photoshopped – the tent is not actually mounted on this truck. The magenta circles are my planned mounting points. The blue arrow is where I predict most of the static weight will be when my wife and I are in there – our heads will be towards the rear of the truck with the blue arrow indicating the area where our hips will land. So, most of the weight will be over the topper and within the mounts.
My worry is the considerable overhang. There is about 30" that will cantilever over the front of the topper and the cab. The Rhino Rack is really strong and I don't anticipate any additional weight – other than my legs – landing over the forward mounts. Do you think I will run into problems with wind up-force at hiway speeds?
