My Mid-life Crisis "build."

AKA the "I'm not spending any money on this that I haven't earned from selling stuff on CL"-build...
AKA the "I need another vehicle like a hole in my head"-build
AKA the "No, dear, I promise you that I'm not building this one"-build.

One of my favorite vehicles of all time was my 96 4runner Limited... Sold it to a buddy after I bought my 1st Gen Doublecab Tundra to pull my, then, 89 4Runner off-road truck. Been begging my buddy to sell it back since the day after - that was over 10 years ago now. I'm never getting it back. Pic from when I bought it. TRD headers/exhaust, airbags, Hellweg sway bars, TRD Wheels and clean as a whistle.

So one day, deep in reminiscing on the 4Runner, I find a 2002 SR5 for sale a few hours away. Appears very clean and has some nice upgrades. Talk to the owner for a bit and decide to pass in hopes that I forget about it. A week later, make arrangements with the owner to drive the 3 hours to take a look. Just in case (ha!), I drag the trailer with me...

This thing was CLEAN. Owned by a clear enthusiast who is only replacing it to build his 2016. Toytec ultimate, LR upper control arms, ARB Tacoma front bumper, 4.88's with TrueTrac, 275/75-16's on 16x10's, nicely upgraded stereo, LED's everywhere, fully sound-deadened... very, very clean. I paid more than I probably should have, so I vowed that I'd only put money into it that I could obtain through purging other things I don't need. This will be my DD.. the Tacoma will go back to Farm Duty and the SuperDuty will go back to Tow Duty/occasional Client-limo...

So I threw a double-din stereo at it to have a backup camera and CarPlay. That was $300 over my budget. Ooops.
Put on some wheel spacers and the FJ wheels/General AT2 285/75-16's off of my Tacoma and sold the BFG/ProComp wheels from the 4Runner for $800. And that's where it sits today.

But I dislike the black on Silver... So I've been looking for some 5-spokes with no luck. Plus... I have a strange vibration that I think is spacer related, so removing them would be ideal.

So here's where we are at... I am either going to buy Ivan Stewart TRD wheels from TRDParts4U... or some FN Konig Countersteer Type X in Matte Silver w/ Diamond Cut Lip. Price is about the same. My FJ wheels (5) should get about $500-600 on CL. Currently leaning towards the Ivan's because... Talk me out of that...

4.88 on 33s? Spins a little fast, doesn't it.

Not at all. I have the same combo in my tacoma and would do 5.29’s if I had to do it again.

People tend to forget the OD in the a340 is very tall @ ~.7:1. The OD in the R150 manual is ~.85:1. Both came with the same 4.1 gears and same size tire (yes, some autos had 4.3:1). So neither of my trucks really have as high cruising RPM as a stock 5-speed.

Remember that the previous 3.0/a340h/31” tire vehicles had 4.88’s from the factory..

Edit: final drive ratio for my setup is .7*4.88=3.41:1.

Stock final drive ratio on an r150 truck is: 4.11*.85=3.49:1.

This is why I’m always pushing to run 4.88s or lower on the automatics.

Since those aren’t one of the two options, I am going to have to reject your write-in candidate. ?

Ha!

Well, your wheel options are like picking which presidential "hopeful" to choose. hmmmm....(gotta say they both suck) :p :D

where are these wheels from please?

Those are Toyota spare tire rims. Usually you can find them on craigslist, salvage yards,....you can buy them online as well. But by the time you pay for shipping you paid too much for some cheap steel rims. Best to source them local. I generally see them anywhere from $25-50 a piece.

Booooooo!!!!!

Both are way more $ than I want to spend... But both are hub centric, have a better look against the silver truck and allow me to get rid of the spacers... your suggestion would force me into spacers again. :p

4Runner/T100 5 spokes then! Painted gun metal! I always liked a contrasting color against the vehicle paint. Light colored vehicles get dark rims, and vice versa. Though can't go wrong with gun metal, works on both me thinks...

Would be ideal, but finding them recently has been a challenge... place in MN refurbs them, but that’s $150/wheel.

And I don’t know if I want to strip/paint another set like I did in 2012...

Took me a couple years to find mine.

Yeah stripping them is a pain. Could always send them out to be chemically stripped and powdered coated...but kinda defeats the purpose of trying to stay cheap.
