10th Gen F-150 Overland build

The girlfriend and I decided to take an impromptu trip through the Rockies and out to Moab UT after the holidays. We knew we wanted to do a bit off light wheeling, and felt that the F-150 would make a better overall platform for this type of adventure. So, I located a cheap bed cap and set to work.

For better off-road prowess we installed: a set of 265-70-17 Goodyear Wrangler Authority tires (Wal-mart Duratracs), the Badlands ZXR-12000 winch on a Warn Semi-Hidden mount kit, disconnected the front sway bar (to combat the increased roll stiffness of the cranked front bars), turned up the front torsion bars, and installed 2” taller blocks in the rear. On-road performance was left largely unaffected, and it cruised very well at 80mph on the way out to our adventures!

The living arrangements in the bed was built from 2x2” treated boards, 3/8” ACX plywood, and trimmed out with some cheap pine. Reflectix insulation was utilized under the bed, as well as over the windows for when we go to bed (temporary solution). Power is provided by 100w of solar panels charging a Group 31 deep cycle battery.

After it’s maiden voyage, we have decided we need to make some slide out drawer under the bed, and address some more organizational issues. The next phase of the build will revolve around adding a fresh water tank under the truck and potentially moving the camper battery under the truck. Enjoy!

Awesome! I have a 1st gen Expedition that I’ve taken on many trips. Great platform. I swear I see more 10th gen F150s and 1st gen Expeditions still on the road than any other “old” vehicle.

The torsion bar front suspension is about the only major downfall of the platform in my opinion (assuming the spark plugs stay in their holes), and even that isnt too bad. Theyre a good bang on the buck backroads explorer!
