4G69 Swap?

Has anyone looked into swapping a 2.4L 4G69 into Gen 1 or 2 montero? I think I've only seen FWD configurations, but can a RWD trans bolt up to the engine? These engines are cheap and easy to find, a bit more underpowered than the 6G but appear to be simpler to work on. I'm really tired of wrenching on these V6's and would easily trade a loss of HP for ease of maintenance.

Afaict there are no longitudinally-mounted 4g69s in any US-market cars. However, that configuration was used by Mitsubishi/CMC Delica (Taiwan), CMC Zinger (Taiwan), Great Wall Motors Haval/Hover H3/H5/X240 and Wingle/V240 (China, Australia), Maxus G10 (Australia, India) and G20, Zhongxing Landmark (China, North Africa), JMC Yuhu/Vigus (China, Australia). So RWD is possible, if you can find a matching gearbox or fabricate the appropriate adapters.

Didn't the mighty max 4x4 come with a 4G variation that would be very similar?

With enough money or skills and tools I'm sure is possible. Have you thought about a different brand swap? Nissan KA24DE comes to mind, plentiful here in the US. The Toyota 4 cyl, etc

Depending on the configuration, the common 4g64s are usually about 15hp less than the 4g69 (similar torque difference), but there were 155 and 105hp versions also. The 98-99 Montero Sport ES 4g64s are clocked around 135hp. However, there is much more aftermarket performance part support for the 4g64, so you could throw a turbo on it and with minimal other cost match the performance of the n/a 3.5L 6g74. 4g64-based rally cars often use T25s for better low end torque. If you have the skillset to swap a longitudinal 4g64 in place of a 6g74, mate it to your existing transmission, and figure out all the resulting ECM gremlins, you probably also have the skillset to handle the turbo build. If not, then a swap-only build (full aggregate) may be feasible.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...

Also a good point, the Toy 2.4 and 2.7 are just about as bolt uppable as the Mitsu Wideblocks but far more common and pulling about 150 horsepower.

I was thinking a sport ES would be perfect, but I've never actually seen one at the junkyard before. Toasty, do you know of anyone who has swapped a toyota 4cylinder into a mitsubishi?

I have, LT and I put a Toyota 1KZ into his Gen 1 in place of a V6. I've also put a 4G64 into a Gen 2 in place of a V6. Toyota swaps are more common in the rest of the world, check the global forums (Aussie, UK and Russia)
