NOAA Alert Radio

Obviously we check the weather before we head out, but most of us know (and recently throughout the past year or two) that weather changes quickly and we should be aware.

In my house, I have a Midland WR120 (I think). It stays plugged in 24 hrs a day, has battery back up, has SAME technology, and it’s set up to alert me of ONLY tornado warnings for my location.

I would like something similar for camping…but I will not have access to a wall outlet so I would prefer something that can be charged and is smaller. I would like something that:

-either sees my location and gives me specific location alerts
-I can tailor specific warnings or watches (I don’t need to be woken up for a thunderstorm watch but flood warnings or tornado warnings, yes)
-smaller/handheld
-rechargeable
-I’d like something that stayed silent until my selected event and level was hit

I don’t want:

-just a scanner to listen to weather channels
-something that needs cell service

I had a portable marine radio but that just gave you continuous weather updates.

Does anything close to that exist?

Kind of, I did some early testing with them.

It works well, and the designer is a member here. He has been very responsive to tweaks as it gets dialed in.

Have to have a sat device, and be tracking though.

If you have a dual/isolating battery system in your truck you can tie a vehicle CB with weather to the house batt and just power it off. That should only wake you, making you s h ! T your pants during the NWS alerts.

Not sure if some GMRS can be programmed for specific types of alerts...

Or get another Midland and plug it into a Jackery or something?

No customization to event, but otherwise pretty great radio. We really like ours and it checks most of your other boxes I think.
Been hearing about C Crane since before Y2K and love the idea. Just have never gotten around to getting one. Maybe this year

I grabbed a

Midland GXT67 Pro

Midland states it will send alerts for severe weather based on location without having to continuously monitor a weather channel. While this isn’t a perfect solution, I’ll take it.

Will report back once I can use it

Why not just get another WR120 and put in the SAME code for where you camp? I have an old WR300 (replaced by the WR400) and I just run it off 12V DC. You can drill down to the alerts you want for the area your in. It's cheaper and more flexible than a hand held radio and has a better antenna for fringe area reception.
