Winch power

I had a Ramsey Rep 8K on my 1992 FJ80, which worked just fine for occasional self-recovery. Add a pulley block and you'll have plenty of pulling power.

I'd say a 9500-10K winch would be more than adequate.

Agreed, 5 pulleys, 2 2x4's and a spectra-line static rope and I could pull my truck out of anything by hand, alone.

I always find it funny how we use mechanical advantage with our gears in the T-case and tranny, but most folks just hook the cable to a tree strap and try to pull the bumper off their trucks... Use the force luke... Mechanical advantage force that is ;)

mount a 6hp 8274 and get a pulley block. speed and power are now covered. youll need a custom bumper.

I have a T-Max 12k and it is slow but slow is good. You really don't want it going so fast that you are unable to stop it in time for that big Oppppsss. Another thing to look at is what are the pullratings if the cable is spooled out. that 8 K winch is good for 8 K only on the last wrap. The more you spool out the less mechanical advantage you have. I will be swapping my 12 K T-Max electric for a 12k Milemarker hydo. Mostly for the smooth pull.

Winches have better pulling power when spooled out! With fewer layers on it, the drum has a smaller effective diameter, so a better mechanical advantage.

I also had a MM hydraulic, and I found it to be a superb winch, quiet, effortless, and it would run all day. The slow speed was not a problem, but I must say I appreciated having the two-speed versions whenever I had to spool in the winch line at the end!

A Warn M12000 will fit most 80 series bumpers and is a very nice winch, well sized for a heavy 80 series.

I agree that winch speed is not a huge factor, except when it's time to rewind the winch cable.

A snatch block will double your pulling power, but it also doubles the force trying to pull off your front bumper.

It takes MUCH longer to rig a snatch block than to do a single line pull-just something to consider.

Any Chinese winch like a T-Max is going to be a crap shoot, with limited future parts availability and service. Parts are still available for 30 year old Warn winches.

Maybe I'm just impatient, but if you get stuck more than once in a while (recreational fourwheeling/rock crawling) the speed of your winch really does matter. Especially if you're wheeling with a group and people are waiting for you.

Well, that's why you attach the end to your Jate ring! (Or to a different anchor altogether, if you're winching someone else using a snatch block). Half the force is on your winch mount and the other half on the other anchor point. :)
