Wide Open Spaces - Hachita NM

On my way back from El Paso TX I took a quick side trip to Hachita NM. There is not much to see out here, which is exactly the point. The wide open spaces here are just amazing. It makes you realize how small we really are in this world. I could have stayed and taken in the view for hours, but after about 30 mins I had to get back to the pavement pounding as Phoenix was still a long ways away. Enjoy!

The clouds out here always look great. I regret not having my camera with me when some of the big thunderstorms roll through.

I was extremely temped to hop the fence and grab the bottle in the lower left hand corner of the shot. From what I could tell it was extremely old and already colored from many years of sun. The fence was posted with no trespassing so I honored the ranchers wishes.

A little black and white always sets a different mood.

I've been through there many times, the sky islands on the Big Hatchets and Animas mountains are full of diversity. Next time you do that trip, head on over to Animas, then south and catch the Geronimo Trail over the Peloncillos into AZ. It's hard to find, but worth the effort.

Yea the sky islands in the area are great. I have made the trip you speak of, many years ago while riding shotgun with my Dad. There are some great areas back in there. I honestly have an appreciation for all types of landscape, and find beauty in all of them. This area specifically makes me want to find a two track and follow it until it ends, then just set up camp and enjoy the endless view and solitude.

Wow those are nice shots. I have never been anywhere flat.

Ironically enough, these pics were taken only a few miles from the Continental Divide.

As always, great pics Laurence. I can't believe you drove that far for the weekend!

HAHA! Thanks... I have driven from Phoenix to El Paso and many parts of NM for weekend trips so many times now, it seems like nothing any more.

Nice pictures! Very impressive shots!

Thanks Tim! I can't help but think how cool it would be to run some of these cool two lanes in NM on a Dual Sport.

I haven't been down that road in years. Your pictures make me want to go back. :costumed-smiley-007

Most excellent... That is the reason I post. I love seeing pics others take of areas that I have and have not been to. It gets me motivated to go see for my self.

Hope you don't mind a few of my pics from that area in your thread. :peepwall:

These are from late 2008. There is a lot off private property down in the bootheel of the state, it's tough to find places to go. I think the Big Hatchets are BLM though.

This is a little south and west from where you were.

In the background here is Big Hatchet Peak which is just south of Hachita.

Not at all!! Those are some great pics! I have never made it to any of the peaks in the area, which I would like to explore someday. Thanks for posting!

What a coincidence....

What a coincidence, I was in Hachita last week to drop off fellow ExPo member Von Petrol at the Antelope Wells border crossing. He's doing the Great Divide Trail on mountain bike.

Von_Petrol's wife and I stopped at Hachita, hoping to find a nice breakfast place but the only place open had microwave food so we passed and instead took pictures of the area.

I didn't realize Hachita was a place other people would know about. It seemed like a real hole-in-the-wall with more border patrol agents crawling around than residents. And the locals sure have an interesting way for making street signs!!

Attached are some photos...

Ahh very cool!!! Those are some great photos too! Not sure about the sign, that is a little odd. The town of Hachita is a little strange, and I have spent little time there. I have spent much more time roaming the areas around there than in town. I hope Von Petrol posts up some pics of his CD ride... That is something I have been wanting to do for a long time now.
