"Jeep Panda" coming in mid-2011?

I've driven a Fiat Panda in Italy. Small, fairly loud and the model I was in was fairly utilitarian. However, my impression was that it was built like a little mountain goat. Strong footed, zipped around well and was according to reports quite reliable.

I could see it making an economical soft-roader in North America, especially if it retains the diesel engine. In fact, I would consider one...

Take it easy! It's a prediction from a consulting firm. Look a year back and see how correct any consulting firms predictions were.

It's just a press-release probably sent out to sitr the waters and create publicity dor said consulting firm.

As for the Fiat Panda, it's actually a capable little off-roader. I've seen a test here where they pitched it against Range Rovers top-model and the little fiat held it's own! Here's the youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAg4DdXAp7Y

Fiat and other south-european car manufacturers have always built small 4x4 especially suited for the alpine regions. They have always been light, spartan and capable.

While that concept may seem like a radio-flyer with a lawn-mover engine strapped on, it actually works! Light weight and a small footprint can be a real benefit offroad.

Ok look here:

What is this? A four-door 4x4

I do recognize that there is some pride and tradition to the Jeep brand, but ask yourself, which brands are still owned by the founders? which car brands are more that just another badge on a platform shared with other models with slightly different headlights and fenders..?

P.S. Remember it wasn't even Jeep - or Willys - who invented the Jeep, it was American Bantam, a company with English roots, who developed the first prototypes, only to whitness Ford and Willys Overland take over the design and the contract!

Jeep needs to be standalone, and not mixed in with junk that quite frankly should have other brands attached to it.

You never saw a dinky Hummer.....(chrome and totally lame yes, but never a little dinker car)

Jeep needs to be "that guy" and hook in with International, or Peterbilt, or even somone like Volvo.....

I've always said, teaming up Land Rover with Jeep would be a match made in heaven as far as I'm concerned.

I just don't get you guys. It's just another vehicle. Does having this "ute" with a Jeep badge somehow make your Jeep less manly? You won't buy it, so why is this upsetting you so much?

I agree. Jeep, as a division of what ever company owns it, needs to be a profitable. To do that, they need to diversify their product mix so it appeals to a wide range of customers. Yes, even those who will never take their Jeep on a dirt road.

IMO, they have a reputation to uphold with the Wrangler, and to a lesser extent the Cherokee (now 'grand'), and I think it would be foolish to soften those vehicles up. Keep those icons alive and well, then add some models to the mix to fill in the rest.

This is what they were doing with the liberty, patriot, compass, etc. BTW, I really like the patriot, for what it is. For cruising the backroads (while getting 30mpg), in relative comfort (compared to a wrangler), with a weeks worth of crap for 2 adults and 3 dogs inside, plus a couple of kayaks strapped down to the roof....it ain't all that bad. We leave my TJ home most of the time. The patriot is just more comfortable for those trips that don't involve severely washed out roads.

Have to agree.. I've had the chance to drive one for the first time while on vacation 10 years ago in Crete with my wife.. the roads in Crete are crap, or for a 4x4 great! But that little 4x4 did the do. Not one problem. Only problem was there was no A/C.. but we got on well. did loose a pair of hiking shoes in the truck when the temp. topped 40º. melted away??? anyway, I think that the more 4x4's on the road maybe the better. safer anyway.. worst thing I ever saw, or should i say the most strange was a BMW car driving down from the Jura mountain range here ridding the rails because there was a lot of snow on the road, and his rear well drive, and street tires couldn't handle it.. I was behind him in my old Honda Civi, and we were in just amazement..

I say let's see what Fiat will do.. better then Jeep going away all together.. and the Europeans love Jeep.

Fiat should keep the Jeep brand "Jeep-like" and avoid making cars like the Patriot and the Compass. The Panda is fine but why call it a Jeep?

There are plenty of good car like 4x4 SUVs (Subaru, VW Tiguan, Rav 4 etc.) around.

For awhile Jeep couldn't keep up with the demand for the 4 door JK especially the Rubicon model. They should have stuck to making Jeeps rather than teh Compass and Patriot etc.

Fiat should continue with the Jeep line up and improve mileage but keep the JK as a real Jeep.

Because Jeep, as a company, needs to be profitable. If they are not, they WILL go away.

Jeep Wranglers alone will not sustain the entire company. Vehicles with a heavy back road influence will not sustain the entire company. They need to diversify their product mix, or they will be out of business. Then there are NO jeeps.

It is not just about the parent company being profitable. Every subsidiary needs to be profitable on their own as well...because if they are not making money, WHY would they keep it around?

What is "jeep-like"? The Wrangler? That is just one SUV.

Jeep has been going in this direction for years. With the four door Wrangler being so populr with the average Joe who just wants to put the top down and have room for his kids in the back seat, it's easy to see In the future the Wrangler becoming more "jeep like"

Jeep also made IFS Wagoneers in the 60's. This entire thread just serves to prove that Jeep has had a very effective marketing campaign over the last decade or two. People believe the trail rated thing so fully that they forget the 2wd Cherokees, IFS and AWD and luxo-woodies, pickup trucks (2 and 4wd), controversial move to unibody construction, Islander package, 5.9 and Hemi street Jeeps, delivery vans, postal Jeeps, and of course the Jeepster. And that's not even counting the whole Eagle fiasco, a brand created with the sole purpose of providing a car to sell in Jeep stores. None of the above were truly designed for go-anywhere rugged off-road simplicity, and many of them helped to pull Kaiser/AMC/Willys/Renault/Chrysler/Daimler through hard times when the Wrangler and Cherk were not enough because not enough people wanted them.

The problem with the "Jeep" brand is it is/was parts of Chrysler. Then there's Dodge. Why did Chrysler need separate brands? If they had been selling vehicles under one name, none of you would be complaining about this now. You could have been driving a Chrysler Wrangler all along. You don't see us Toyota guys complaining because Toyota has come out with so-and-so. We have our 4x4's and are happy with them. What ever car they produce doesn't bother us. Do you think the Honda loyal buyers are upset because Honda branched out and made a couple of SUV's and a truck?

I wish Honda would make a real truck! The Ridgeline is cool in its way but it needs a proper longitudinal truck drivetrain, transmission, transfer case, etc. SRA would be cool too.

I'd buy one.
