Seeking on board water tank options for JK

Not having much luck finding on board water tank options for my JK Unlimited so would appreciate any info. I'd like to carry 10-20 gal that could be pumped out on demand. Heater not required. I don't mind mounting something to the frame or inside. I prefer not to have to lug around 5 gal containers. Coupled with some kind of simple portable sink arrangement the goal is if I decide to go trailerless how can I use my daily driver as a part time expedition/camping vehicle?

Thanks for any tips.

I'd check at an RV store like Camping World or a marine supply place as they would have different sizes of water tanks and 12volt pumps

Here's a copy of one of my posts from my Tundra build thread...

Here's a shot of our on-board water system...

As usual it will serve multiple purposes but it will mainly be used to transport water to Log Home chinking/caulking jobs where there is no water supply and as camp water supply for washing/cleanup duties. I got this 25 gal ATV sprayer from Tractor Supply for $119.00 complete with tank, 30# psi pump with auto shut-off, power leads (with switch, inline fuse, and battery terminal clips), 5" fill hole, out feed hose and sprayer. I took the sprayer head off, used a 3/8 barb x 1/2 MPT brass male adapter then a CPVC Union to attach a 6 position garden hose sprayer. On the Jet position it shots water a good 40'. I mounted it on some scrap 1/2 pressure treated plywood added strengthing cleats and casters. Then I built a top shelf (with a 8" hole in the middle to access the water fill cap) so our travelling cooler can ride on top. Sprayed the "structure" with Duplicolor rattlecan bedliner and called it done.

Now this set-up is 38" long, 18" high and 18" wide so it may be abit big for your JK, but you can buy either a 15 gal. tank or 20 gal. tank set-up in the same manner. We just got back from our UP trip and the tank worked excellently, my wife was quite happy with the results.

Also check out Jim65wagon's Tundra Build and his set-up for his water tank. His was the inspiration for mine and he got his inspiration from Articulate's water system on his Nissan.

Great ideas guys thanks for sending them so soon. Keep them coming. Mark you have me thinking of new options now.

One potential plan for the JK conversion is:

Sell my current hard top (listed in the for sale area) and replace with Wild Board fastback hard top and their matching roof rack.

Probably mount a Maggiolina tent.

Since I retained most of my gear from the sale of my AT Horizon I have a lot of what I need except for water supply and table/sink area.

JK already tows behind our RV (heading to Fort Worden in a few weeks) but I want to have the ability to head off road on occasion with a telescope and have the ability to camp as we did with the trailer. Another possibility is purchase the AT Oasis or King Kamper so I have several options. Outlook on production Oasis is hard to predict although I have no doubt it will be sweet.

I currently like the thought of playing with the JK more for a self-contained setup hence why I'm exploring that angle.

I ran across this link a while back and thought it as pretty unique. The bags don't hold a lot of water but you can attach them to your seat backs or in pairs, sort of like saddle bags, to your roll bar. It isn't powered but does offer a drain tube without having to unhook them from their mounting location. i like the idea since it puts them up out of the way and eliminates the bulky rigid containers.

Hi Wade...not sure what sort of off-roading you're planning on doing, but I have a Wild Boar fastback hard top. I had their matching fastback roof rack and a Maggiolina RTT mounted on top. Well, the roof rack lasted less than 3 hours off-road before being destroyed and scrapped. The Maggiolina isn't the type of RTT I'd suggest to mount on the roof of a JK and expect to hold up to any sort of abuse. One strong tree limb and you're looking at an expensive repair. I've since switched to a Outlander Trailer and a Mombasa Outdoors RTT. At least I know if the Mombasa RTT gets a hole punctured through it, it's much more easily fixed (and cheaper). Just something to think about. As for the hard top, I've rubbed it on some trees here and there and it has held up as best as could be expected. Best of luck.

WFTW,

Did flexing do the WB rack in which then twisted the tent mount or was it tree limbs or possibly something else?

I know its not quite as much water as you originally wanted to carry, but the soon-to-come AEV rear bumper can hold 5.5 gal. Its pretty sweet and a cool way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

You've probably seen it before, but if not, check it out...

Matt

I intend to order this when it is ready for shipping which should be soon and yes I like the 5.5 gal of potable for washing, etc. Not much but heck it's 5 gals less I have to carry elsewhere. I saw one on a JK at the Prescott Expo.

There is a Wood's Jeep JK trunk expander that replaces the rear shallow trunk area under the floor that if built strong enough could be an ideal space for probably a 10 gal water tank. Seems to me this under floor space on Jeeps is ideally suited for a water tank presuming a skid is added for protection and might have to relocate the muffler which I did already.

Hmmm....~13 gallons. Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Looks like you could even snap 2 units together if weight is not a problem.

I REALLY like this option.

Does that look like it holds 13 gallons, though? :coffee:

I might just not seeing the overall scale. we're there dimensions listed? I'll have to go back and see.
