How bad was that road? Really?

Possibly the most helpful thread ever!

I stopped taking pictures of river paddling because of the same problem.

I get lucky sometimes, but that does not necessarily create knowledge that allows me to recreate a technique for success next time.

How could this one have been better?

Someone above mentioned vehicles at different heights and thats is exactly what (along with different angles) I like about "Bringing In the Vans" by Craig Miller (Overland Navigator) on Fortune Creek Trail Washington as two Land Rovers run lead and sweep with my AstroLander and a Sportsmobile in the middle.

But even with the flex showing, I feal this situation totally escaped my photographic skills on both picture attempts. My AstoLander (as I like to call it:sombrero:) on Vedder Mt., BC. Do you agree, or is that the best that I could have hoped for? What could I have done to capture this? It was a steep hill (Ridge Line trail) and it doesn't show at all.

I could go on all day, but afraid I've already surpassed my quota. Sorry.

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks again, and excellent thread.

When the size of the rocks starts to approach the size of the rig the trail can look a bit "bad".

Angles can be fun.

Someone else mentioned shooting low angle shots up an obstacle.

I think this cleary show's the dificulties....not quite the type of trail the average overlander follows !!

I would have turned around on gone back the other way, love the little wheels on the rear corners !!

Don't know if the road looks all that bad, but what a great, atmospheric picture.

Yes I am afraid that is an image that fails to show how bad the trail actually was.
Especially if you view through a CRT monitor, comes out very dark.

This is a great thread subject, one I have given glimpses of thought to before but now will be a glaring mission in my mind when I am out on the trail.

I agree. I have always been disappointed with how tame the pictures make the trails look. I'll have to focus on this on my furture runs. I like the idea some have put forward about the wide angle lens and getting up close.

Now I just have to save for a good wide angle lens.

It is a challenge to get a good shot that shows the terrain as it is even following those rules.

One thing I've stared doing since I have an slr is take a number of shots of the action then make an animated gif using all the shots in order...

Unfortunately, most 'free' picture hosting sites won't host them.

Here's one of them of my buddy's montero running 37's playing at the Niagara Rim Trail in the Sierra Nevada's.

Matt, where are those trails?

All of the trails are in northern California. The first is on the Rubicon, the second is at Hollister Hills SVRA, I think the third is Pardos, and the fourth is the Slickrock trail near Lake Alpine.

UK4X4, the white Pathy is a friend's rig, he had the wheels installed for a trip to Moab and they worked pretty well. The Rubicon trip was definitely not what I would consider an "expedition" since it was a grueling 3 day slog. We went through with 2 IFS Nissan's with rear lockers, ~3" lifts, and 32" tires (one truck had mostly bald ATs on it). Everybody we ran into would make a comment like "what are you doing out here in those trucks"? :) We made it to Tahoe with no breakage and only a few minor scratches, had a great time.

Interesting idea, but I have to say, I think I usually prefer a few sequential but separate shots.
