I know, I know another tire question, but...

Brothers,
I am new and trying to maximize my hard earned dollars so I would like to bounce this off of yall. I have a 96 gmc k1500 burb that is my adventuremobile. Camp, hunt, fish, respond to federally declared disasters, general dad stuff, etc. Mostly I will be on the highway and dedicated trails. But that doesn't discount the reality of needing to traverse sloppy terrain. Therefore I normally look for a mud terrain. I am running buckshot mudders now and love them. BTW I am in North Texas on the Blackland Pairie, home of the bottomless mud, lots of clay in it. I travel to all four corners of this state and then some in my little area of the world.

So....
Would I be better served by using the expo 255/85/16 or the size I am running now, 285/75/16. BTW it is lifted 3" with a body lift so a little bigger tire may go under it as it sits now. I also have a swing away tire carrier I built. Pics of that are soon to come. Its heavy!

The general dad needs to save money while at the same time endulging in life's pleasures. As a result, you need to go to www.treadwright.com and buy a set of 285-75-16 A/T's. You'll save $400 on your tires from comparable BFG's which will make all parties happy. There is a time for the "perfect tire" and there is a time for "the tire". Now you need "the tire".

I would stick with the 285's, in a big heavy rig extra tire width is always a plus in my books.

One thing to consider: The 285 is going to be more common if you have to replace it unexpectedly.
