F/S, small mil surplus transit and storage cases

Let me try this again. My previous thread got deleted, and I haven't gotten any response from the mod on what the problem was, so after reviewing the rules, my guess is that I didn't specify the quantity available. From the forum rules:

You are considered to be a business if you:
.
.
3. Are trying to sell a single product which is USED in a quantity greater than 10 units.
.
.
.

I have 10 surplus (used) transit and storage cases available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also, I didn't specify the location. I assumed that having it in my profile was sufficient, but just to be clear: Cedar Park (Austin) TX 78613.

Sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to ensure ‘full disclosure.' Feel free to hit the 'back' button at any time.

I wanted to get a few of these cases for myself, but the seller wouldn't break up the pallet, so I ended up with extras, and thought I would make ‘em available to the ExPo crowd.

ADDED: Please see the Q&A posts that follow for more information that I overlooked in this initial write-up. Also, I can make the high-res pix available if you send me an email address.

They look brand new, with just a few normal scuffmarks. The paint is still bright and the stenciling is ‘sharp.' I really doubt if they have seen any weather or UV.

The military listed them as 8” X 14” X 18”; must be overall OD. They're about the size of a really large briefcase or small carry-on. 7” X 12” X 16” ID, so if you leave about 1” of padding all around, the largest piece of delicate equipment that you could put in one would be about 5” X 10” X 14”.

With some custom-cut foam, dividers, pockets, or such creativity they would work great for camera equipment, laptops (3 or 4 laptops, or 1 laptop with tons of room for accessories), first aid kits, etc. Leave out the foam altogether, and throw ‘durable goods' such as your recovery gear in ‘em. Here's my 15.4" laptop sitting on one for reference. I was going to put the camera in one, but that left me nothing to take the picture with :Wow1:

Stackable/Interlocking. Note the four indents on the top? There are matching lugs/legs on the bottom. I hauled em about 15 miles in the back of box truck, stacked 6-high but unsecured, around corners and over railroad tracks, and they didn't move.

Relief valve, not to be confused with a dry suit relief valve http://www.divegearexpress.com/exposure/reliefvalve.shtml

TRANSIT CASE BAR CODE READER' stenciled on the top and all four sides, but I'm thinking Krylon Fusion in Satin Khaki will take care of that...

As mentioned on another thread, you can get foam rubber (mattress foam) at some local sewing supply or surplus stores, or you can get ‘pick and pluck' foam directly from Pelican and from eBay. Where I used to work we did several custom cases using a black foam that was stiffer than ‘mattress foam,' cut well, and worked great. I'll try to see if I can find a source for it.

Note that they originally had a padded divider. It is pretty poorly executed, but illustrates how a hinged divider could be employed to keep stuff in the top half when closed.

As the pictures show, there is a little deflection along the long edges, but it looks like they still seal well. Also, there tends to be a little gap in the rubber seal along one edge (see picture). Since the top half overlaps the bottom half by about 1/2", rain should never be a problem. However, 60 mph wind-driven rain may get in, so if you are planning on using these on a roof rack in a monsoon, you might want to put a little silicon there...

And a few more shots:

I would like to get $20 each for them (plus shipping from 78613) to cover my expenses. But I AM unemployed, so if you would like to send more money, you're welcome to... :) Paypal, cash, check (with the standard 2-week wait to clear).

Of course, I would be glad to combine shipping, if it saves money. Or deliver W/I a reasonable distance.

i might have missed it, but do these have handles?

Sorry that wasn't clear. There is one handle. You can kind of see it on the first two pictures, centered on the front side like a briefcase.

Here's a picture that shows the handle. The case is upside-down, so you can see the feet I mentioned, as well.

ADDED: The typical spring-loaded handles that pop out of the way when not in use.

Are these still available?

What do they roughly weigh - for shipping purposes?

Are they roughly comparable to a Pelican case, or more or less "stout" (wall thickness, etc)?

We travel overseas with medical equipment so they might be great - I jsut need to get a better idea of them.

would you please PM me to make sure I am aware of your reply?

Thanks
John

Hi John,

I apologize that I didn't have this info in the thread. I know I had it in the original (that got deleted), but must have overlooked it when I reposted.

And I aplogize for the length of this reply, but I really am striving for 'full disclosure.'

Yep, only sold a couple so far.

What do they roughly weigh - for shipping purposes?

Right at 6# each, weighed with my bathroom scales and verified via 2 - 3# dumbells and a makeshift balance beam. I haven't shipped any yet, so I don't have a more accurate weight. I should be shipping the two I sold tomorrow, so I will have a UPS weight then, and will update the thread.

I have worked with Pelican, Hardigg, ECS, and various military transit cases on a regular basis over the last 25 years. And, honestly, these cases feel a little more flexible, but it could just be because they don't have as many ribs and reinforcements as other cases.

Having said that, they are plenty stout.

Matter of fact, I just went out to the garage and jumped up and down on one. No damage, no latches popping open, no nothin'. I weigh 210#.

I honestly think these may be just the ticket for your purposes. They may not be as over-built as the Pelican cases, but that keeps them lighter.

Let me know.

I shipped out two cases today, and UPS said that together with the thin cardboard I had 'em wrapped in the total weight was 14#.

So the cases are probably 6.5# each (leaving a pound for the cardboard and tape).

other points I am not clear on:

are the lids hinged? or do the cases come apart into two separate pieces?

if hinged, is the hinge piano type, or what?

How many locks/latches on each box?

thanks, John

The Foam Factory looks like a great resource - the same product at a fraction of the price of the name brand case suppliers.

John,

Sorry, again, for the lack of info. There is no hinge, they separate into two halves. There are 6 latches on each box.

This pic shows the top half, inverted, with the bottom half off to the side:

Sorry to be so picky about details, but to carry what we want we need to make sure they fit. So...

When the two halves are separated, are they about the same depth each, or is the lid/top shallower than the bottom?

What is the distribution of the 6 latches? Two each on the long sides and one each on the shorter sides?

Thanks, John
