Neat CJ based pickup idea

Looks to me like the rear axle should be moved back a couple of inches.

That would have been ideal and a little more visually pleasing, but to use the stock shackles with the Waggy front springs (used in the back), I needed to have the short end of the spring in front of the axle (the bushing widths front-to-rear were different). The wheelbase was ~96.5" - a couple inches longer than a CJ-7. If I remember correctly, I moved the axle back around 11.5" from the stock location.

That's the "standard" front end on CJ-10 pick-ups, and CJ-10a aircraft tugs. I still have a mint-condition '10a grill left over from one of the ones I owned. I'm not sure yet what I'll be doing with it...wall art, future project, possibly sell (???).

Wall art - I've got a YJ grille I'm going to use for flood lights outside the work shop.

Agree on sectioning the M101 trailer to make the bed a touch narrower. I'm not sure if I'd make it as narrow as the cab though; need to ge tthe tape measure on it and see what makes sense. I'd also look at hinging the sides to fold down like a Unimog.

What I like about this idea (the M101 version) is that it is über functional and ugly. If I had a Brute type Jeep I'd be afraid to use it as a pickup truck - scratch and dent the bed would bring tears.

This? Dump that spare engine into the back with the fork lift and drive away. Who cares if it bangs it up.?

Wow, I like it, never even heard of a cj-10 before, probably pretty darn rare.

That m-101 bed looks good, are m101 trailers easy to get a hold of? I'm just thinking of all the possible trucks and converted suvs that would look great with that bed... lol. Thats one thing that kind of bugs be about modern pickups, they're so fancy and shiny that people don't even like beating on them like a truck was designed for.

Nah... that's an old CJ10 (nearly as rare as an FC)...

I know of a freaking gorgeous FC-170 SRW just sitting in a guys yard. I want it bad. Its in such amazing condition just looking at it from the road that it would be the ideal candidate for a full show room floor resto. I'm afraid to go up to the guys house and ask him about it though, people around here don't take too kindly to trespassers and he has a lot of cars on his property so I doubt he would give the Willy's up for a fair price.

Nah... that's an old CJ10 (nearly as rare as an FC)... throwing a POS Chevy motor in it is just plain sacreligious... Now a Nice Mopar Poly-head 318 or and injected 5.9 out of a ZJ.

Personaly I think it'd make a great truck for a 4BT swap... Gassers just don't do it for me out on the trail. Diesel is where it's AT

Yea but they are a dime a dozen and keeping it mopar would be much better suited. Speaking of dime a dozen, a simple 4.0 wouldn't be a bad motor choice. Might be a little underpowered, but I've never been one for crazy HP anyways. Plus they are easy enough to come by and parts available at every autoparts store in North America.

the op's picture is from a build on pirate4x4. the guy is currently putting a 4bt in it, and has one ton axles.

i'm still trying to picture what a full cj7 hardtop with a flatbed behind it would look like. i keep thinking it would be weird.

Go diesel or don't go...

It looks like a rugged truck. Can carry in a far more utilitarian fashion than a more traditional heep, and will be better suited to the facets of a diesel. Long idling, creeping over rocks, power to pull grades and tow (even if only a little) without emptying the bank. I would look at the 3.3 Cummins or the VW TDI motor. Both work exceptionally well, have decent power, and are used all over the world. They are fairly straight foreward to swap and if all gearing is thought out accordingly will knock down VERY respectable MPG numbers!
