So could one swap something like a jeep 4.0L and Auto (aw4) or manual(ax15) trans?

This adapter would allow the jeep transmission to make to the rover transferbox right?

1991-1994 4.0L HO, AW4 Auto, 23 spline output

That's the info I found...seems like it would work, if it does in fact have the circular 6 type pattern.

I thought the subject was important enough both as an upgradr for Land Cruiser owners...

Are Rover T-case considered an upgrade for Land Cruisers? I've never heard that? Advanced Adapters has made the full spectrum of adapters for the LC t-case as well as 3:1 and 4:1 ORION heavy duty t-case for the older Land Cruisers. Newer Cruisers (split t-case) already have rock solid t-cases. I can't imagine the Rover case offers anything in strength or gearing over the existing options on the market?

The LT230 may actually be even stronger than the Orion, and less expensive.

Ah, now that you mention the LT230 I do recall hearing of it, there were some long discussions on PBB years ago about it but when the Orion came out it pretty much put those swaps to bed. Reading up on the LT230 it looks like it commonly has a 1.22:1 or 1.4:1 high range and its full-time 4WD with no option for front drive only. So it wouldn't be too suitable of a swap for the average Land Cruiser with a low rev inline. However it looks like it could be suitable for a trailered trail rig running big tires and the stock gearing (3.70's or 4.11's) as they would pick up that needed high range get up and go without much worry of top end speeds. There were some old references to 1:1 high range non-US import cases and part-time conversion kits so it very well could be tailored to other setups. It looks like it could be a suitable option for some. I personally run the newer style 'split' LC transfer cases in my Cruisers, they have the same touted reliability that I'm reading about LT230's, about the only way to destroy them is ********** them hard against a rock :D

Perhaps a pictorial tutorial might assist:

Here is a cross section of your typical Land Cruiser transfercase (broke while said Land Cruiser was climbing a hill)

Below, notice the thickness of the case

Compared to the thickness of a Land Rover transfercase below

Also look at the case opening for the Land Cruiser's intermediate gear shaft below

Compared to the much larger diameter hole for the Land Rover's intermediate shaft hole below

The larger Land Rover intermediate shaft supports larger intermediate shaft bearings and a much beefier transfercase gearset.

Below are pictures of a bare Land Rover transfercase housing

Sorry, I don't have any pictures showing an intact Land Cruiser transfercase.
