That thing looks like it is about ready to collapse under its own weight let alone when the rain is pouring down on it.

sorry but Major Fail!!

lol its fine. the awning will hold itself up without a problem. i have no doubts of that.

really...no doubt?

sorry but add 30-lbs of water on top and the thing is going to parallelogram and the PVC pieces at the corner will snap and thats all she wrote.

some corner stakes may prevent that part of the failure.

the other issue come when it fills with water and just starts to seep thru and drip.

Most anyone that has used that material as a tarp will know where I am coming from on that.

if that water starts pooling in the middle like you say and does build up THAT much, sure we could have issue. I am not worried about that kind of tarp having any seeping/dripping issues though. i've used the brown tarps for makeshift rainflies and awnings in the past while working on cars. i've seen water pool up over my head and not had a single drop hit me. if i was using the crappy blue tarps, i'd be soaked, you're right.

this will work fine for my uses. if i get the money, i'll buy myself a hannibal and toss this crap out. but this will work fine. if you think this one is crap, you havent spent much time in the "post your camp awnings" thread on this site hahaha.

Really?

I just paged through and didnt see any I thought were more flimsy then yours.

atleast add some triangles for strength in the form of ropes and stakes, without them that thing goes to pieces in the first wind or rain storm.

While I do agree with adding the ability to tie it down with ropes staked into the ground as an option if you plan on leaving it out for an extended period of time.... I don't really get why he needs to built it to withstand a hurricane. I certainly wouldn't be under it if the weather got as bad as you're trying to prepare him for.

i said earlier in this thread that there will be ropes and stakes added. its hard to pound a stake into a concrete driveway with pictures. . . . i'm sorry you think i'm that retarded. by no means would i set that thing up anywhere without them. those were quick shots purely showing what i made and how i made it.

lol basically. i'm not putting that **** out in a torrential rain or with winds higher than 10mph. i'm sitting in the truck in that situation LOL.

I built the thing to work or relax in the shade when i'm parked for a long while out in the woods hiking in remote areas or working with animals. sure this is for camping too, and it will work fine for my purposes. if i was in a camping and that thing collapsed or was torn to shreds, my tent would be in bad shape too lol.

What makes the hannibal awning better other than the sweet hannibal logo on it? I feel like a stiff fart could fold that thing up.

The fact that it's well designed and constructed.

However, it won't hold up in a strong wind either. I don't think that's the intent of these things. They're for convenient shelter from the sun and light rain. Not hurricane Katrina.

bingo. the fact that the arms are well built, the design of the hinges, etc etc. its quality stuff. its built just as nice as the roof racks, and i havent seen many racks that are comparable in quality.

Thats what I am saying!...sorry I was being a little facetious in the other post. Its something to use if its starts raining a little or to keep the sun off your back. If the PVC elbows break, well then, they break and you go get some more...no biggie.

x2 on what Musky said, I would find me some long bugee cords and go corner to corner to support the tarp.

You know what would be slick if you did it right is if you could get an old projector screen that rolls up in a housing and replace the screen with a waterproof canvas/whathaveyou...just use it for the rolling mechanism. I see people throwing them out all the time. Or maybe thats just the redneck in me coming out in that idear.

made a very simple yet very functional wash hose today to attach to the jerry can for cleaning and filling smaller containers.

Also picked up some trail spares for my FL to TX trip.

Ordered 1" rear suspension spacers from Lucky 8, they are made by Columbia Rovers.
