I was killing time with my little guy at the local Military surplus shop here in London and had a scary situation develop while looking at some surplus Ammo boxes.

My little guy being 2.5 and wound for sound thought it would be cool to play with al the boxes and climb on them. 1 min later we are walkin gout the door I suspect he was picking his nose or wiping his face and all hell broke loose on the poor kid. Tears, snot, screamming, watering mouth, gaging.... All at the front counter. All the employees and customers thought the kid had just been smacked by me or was gaging on something.

I brought him outside to get some air and water from the truck. I then realized that he was on and touching the amo boxes and had CS gas (tear gas) contamination. I recognized it from my own CS gas training at CFB Pet. Not a fun experiance when i was 18 and I know sure as hell it sucked for my little guy at 2.5 years old.

Now I was PISSED! I tied the little guy in his car seat and went back in a tore a few new ***** holes. And told them they are gonna have to decontaminate their stock.

Now, on my way home I was dumb and not thinking wiped my own nose with my hand. Guess what! I fukin got my self! At home Cameron got a bath and I got a nice cold shower and a load of laundry to make sure.

He was fortunate it was only CS... while I understand his concern, especially for his little boy (I know I would have done the same exact thing!) There are a lot more dangerous things out there, like a father who lets his son climb on stacks of ammo cans...

Or a father who straps his kid in the car seat and leaves him in the parking lot while he goes back in the store to raise 7734 (calculator talk).

this is how I would have responded :)

sorry to hear :( seriously I hate to see any child in pain !!!!! it sucks especially when its the parents fault for putting the child in that position to be hurt
but it sounds like you should take %100 responsibility for it happening rather than blaming others !!! man up its your fault and yours alone !!!!

my child has learned not to play with things that are not theirs ? not for CS problems cause its the correct thing !

if I buy stuff from a surplus or second hand place it would be inspected and cleaned by me before my child would play with it ?

a stack of ammo boxes is not a jungle gym and a surplus store is not a playground !

in some states (not sure about Canada) its illegal to leave your kid in your car ? I really hope his mother was in the car and he was not alone ???

learn how to be a proper parent this is %100 your fault

hold on a minute .. its to easy to blame the the guy for being a bad parent . and we have to assume he is not.. i for one, never would have known that i could get contaminated by anything sold at a surplus store , and im almost 50 yrs old.. i always pick up stuff and look at it,, yes the guy says he had military training.. so maybe he should know.. but what about the people like me .. i had no idea this could happen.. so i thought hmmn if i dont know , i am sure there are others that dont this either,, i for one will be much more carefull next time i go rummaging through any surplus stores...

Love the Super Parent perspective. You keep your toddler on a leash? Or just locked up in your living room? I refuse to believe that you raised perfect children and that they were never in any risk otherwise. How will your children ever learn risk management for themselves if you keep them in a bubble?

I'm with Gasman. I thought about buying ammo cans a number of times but haven't yet. If/when I did, I had no idea this was a possibility either, and then they would have been in my house where they might have been touched.

This is definitely making the rounds, I read it on Pirate and they were less than sympathetic. No surprise there right? lol

I certainly wouldn't have thought that my kid could suffer this sort of irritation from touching ammo cans, but I woud have thought about the lead powder that would likely be on them. I know some people say the store should have cleaned out the cans before putting them on display, and I agree. However, how often have you seen used/surplus ammo cans up for sale and they are actually cleaned and shiny looking?
I've seen dirty, usually very rusty cans, but never cleaned ones!
Just because they "should" do it a certain way doesn't mean anybody actually does.

I think this is one of those cases where blame can be shared by both parties - dad and store.
(Chances are there is some legal issues with selling a product with that strong of an irritant on it's surface, even if it is a surplus store.)

That's my point. Yeah, you should try to have an eye on what your toddler is doing at all times. But sometimes **** happens, and chemical contaminates shouldn't be on otherwise innocuous metal boxes in a consumer store. It's not like he was letting his kid play with a bottle of peper spray.
