pintle noise

The pintle-hitch and lunette eye on Mah Deuce and my military trailers seem to be pretty well-matched. Sure they clank and bang around a little bit, but I'm driving a deuce and a half, so I can barely feel/hear it.

:sombrero: Good to hear, can't fool you guys !!

When noises bother me--I fix/change it, I have a Pintel/Lunette--Ball hitch and Lock & Roll hitch set up, so I've got a choice--

I've used the Lock & Roll hitch, for over two years and it's my "quiet" favorite !

I also have jeep, but it's quiet, except for the exhaust :wings:

JIMBO,
this thread is about Pintle hitch noise and ideas of silencing them a bit with some ideas. not a debate on the max coupler hitch. Heck if i want quiet i will just not take my trailer. there is another that you are already argueing this point so lets not let this thread waver off into another debate also.

I have to disagree with one statement. The older style of Pintle hitches do have 360 degree rotation. The newer styles do not though.

I love the idea of the inner tube wrap! The Pintle is an excellent design. Its been around for over 50 plus years for a reason.

Machine time is expensive. If you can make the desired shape some other way ("near net forging", "near net casting", etc.) the less the part will cost to make. If you can stamp it from sheet metal and not have to machine it at all your part cost is about as low as it can go. If you can squirt it from plastic the parts cost just dropped again. I'll be curious to see how metal injection molding works out on a cost basis and in strength.

As for me, I'm now itching to find out just how noisy these things really are. It will either motivate a project or eliminate it.

i run a pintle hitch , on the road and hiway i dont hear it,, off road , yeh it cluncks , but i drive a jeep, its loud and cluncky anyway, ive seen too many threads with those'' rotational '' couplers twisting and breaking, i dont know if they were installed right or abused or what ? but i can honestly say that i havnt ever seen anybody post anything about a pintle hitch breaking, im sure it has happened somewhere, but i aint seen it , so i will put up with a few more clunks and bangs ,

I barely hear the pintle on my M101 when driving around and honestly don't remember it much offroad.

One thing I do like about it is that it does get noisy when I don't have enough tongue weight. Normally clues me in to rebalance the trailer before getting on the highway with it.

mr rezdiver... i like the idea with the inner tube but i wonder about it a little bit , will it not bind a little and hinder the movement a bit???

I have not had issues, i shouldnt say that. if it does want to bind it will just rip the tube and move where it wants to.
the area that i get rips in the most is on the lowest part of the jaw but that is not the noise area, the tube stays pretty well at the front and back of the lower jaw and that is where the pintle slaps forward and backwards during braking and acceleration.

You can get either type. Rotating or non-rotating lunnette or for that matter rotating or non-rotating pintle hook.

But the rotating Lunnette isn't common.

In the mean time maybe some type of heavy duty polyurethane rubber donut (thin wall) that can be easily mounted on the lunette? On the front part.

Another good thing about pintle hooks! if your bogged to the axles with a trailer and have to unhook the trailer the pintle is the easiest to disconnect, couplings with pins etc are a pain in the xxse!

My M101A1 has a rotating lunnette too, and I have to say that I haven't experienced any noise or banging/clunking. I use a 2" ball/pintle hook combination and the lunnette is a snug fit (between the forward side of the ball and hook and the top and bottom of the hook.) I haven't used this trailer much and only around a hunting club though.

I have an M101A2 coming that I want to modify for camping/hunting/fishing trips and am interested in eliminating as much noise and clunking as posible.

For the ball/pintle combo, I wonder if one of the urathane ball covers might do the trick for a looser lunnette/pintle connection. It should tighten up the fit and provide some minor cushioning.
