Thanks for a great report. You really captured the feel of the Great Basin.

Yup, those were pronghorn antelope. Looks like you got pretty close.

We had a wet and late winter here in the high desert. A lot of dirt roads I drive regularly that almost never have weeds were completely covered by mid-July.

Thanks again.

Another great report. Thanks for sharing.

You definitely need an upgrade in your kit for the wire cutters.

I'm surprised that you don't take any extra fuel with you. I'm close enough to you that If you ever want to borrow one of my 10 or 20L Wedco's just let me know. I'm happy to loan you one or two.

I'd love to join you on a trip one of these days. I really like the mix of purpose, driving, and hiking you mix into your trips.

I'll just join in the general accolades here - great trip report!

It's a great reminder of the kind of traveling I used to do - come up with a cool place or a memorable event and just go there. I love to visit various historical places, especially "recent history" which tends to be overlooked by a lot of "serious" historians (my favorites are Cold War relics like the missile silos that dot the Colorado prairie.)

Looking forward to more. The photos are great, too.

I'll pile on too. Great report -- one of the more enjoyable series on the Forum that captures not only scenery but aviation history and little known America. I've learned a lot. Thanks!

I appreciate the feed back; gives me motivation to write up some more trip reports as I am several trips behind right now.

Cabrito, thanks for the offer, but (and I hate to admit this) I have three 5 gal cans! I just hate carrying them as I can always smell the gas after a bumpy road. However I got 2 of them with me now (currently between Reno & Fallon as Rasa is taking her shift driving). Of course this weekend we are towing the trailer so our mileage drops from the mid teens to just above 10 MPG!

Thank you for this thread! Between it and the "Spin the bottle" thread I'm antsy to get going on my trip to OR this next week.

What kind of cans are they? That doesn't seem normal; you might want to check the seals to make sure they're intact.
Agreed. If those are Wedco's or Sceptor's there is something wrong if you can smell fuel. If they are Blitz's then that's about right.

Adding to the chorus... thanks for sharing! Remotest Central & Northern Nevada has been on my short list of go-to destinations for years. Even more fun when there is an additional purpose.

Agree with the question about the cans. What are they? I've been traveling with NATO-style steel jerry cans for some time now. I carry them strapped inside my Bronco and have never had so much as a whiff of fuel, let alone a visible leak. I've personally witnessed one depart the rear bumper of a friend's Bronco in Saline Valley a few years ago, at better than 50 mph. The thing flew, bounced, and flew again before grinding to a halt. We figured it was a goner. Nope. A couple of dents and scratches, otherwise none the worse for the wear. And all 5.3 gallons of gas were intact.

Yep, they are 5 gal Blitz's. 2 metal ones & one short fat plastic one. I think the metal ones would not leak if I used a wrench to tighten the "bung" cap on. (The plastic one would not leak if it was empty :sombrero: ) I want to get two more metal cans and will probably go with Wedcos.

My wedco's don't leak at all. No fumes or anything. Happy to loan you one or two if you'd like. Just let me know.

I'll bet they will :( I've tried that, on several that I had before I discovered NATO cans. I never could get any of the 4 or 5 I used to own to not leak. Ever. They are probably ok for storing gas for your lawnmower in your shed where you don't care about the smell, or something like that.

I know a secret spot where you can get NATO cans, cheap. Or you could as recently as a couple of months ago. Requires rummaging through them till you find nice ones, but well worth the effort. I have like, oh, 8 of them now (greedy).

Thanks again, but I am planning to have 4 cans permanently mounted on the camp trailer. I will use the two metal Blitz’s I already have and then get 2 Wedcos. I do have a question for you though. Are your cans pre CARB or post CARB, and if post CARB, do they leak? I don’t care if they leak while pouring—heck, my Blitz’a do that so it is nothing new, and I am probably going to get a super siphon anyway—I am just concerned if the new CARB Wedcos leak during transport. I read one post on here that they do not leak and another that they do, so I would like to get some more feedback from anyone who has used the new CARB Wedcos.
