If I buy a p&s this might be the one.

Whats on top has a lot to do with why I like it.

Well if the dials at the top is your only criteria, then the Canon G11 will suite you just fine..

The Fuji breaks ground for its combination of in-body optical VF + large sensor

Its not the only criteria, but I like how they are postioned and I like the look and size of the camera.
The Canon was already on that short list of p&s cameras that I would have looked at but add the the other features you mentioned, VF and sensor, and the Fuji is looking pretty sweet.

No zoom = no thanks.

I think the idea of this and a couple of other cameras with a fixed focal length lens on a P&S is just stupid. IMO of course. :D

Wow, I love the aperture ring. I've really missed that feature on the newer pro zoom lenses.

I love the look of it too...classic style.

The viewfinder has been what a lot of higher-end P&S cameras have been missing; this is the case even with several Leicas, which is surprising.

The only thing that would hold me back is that you cannot change lenses. 35mm is great (equivalent), but add in a 50mm and an 85mm and I think that would cover a lot of your bases for rangefinder-style shooting.

APS-C size sensor? That's great. Image quality on this should rival some of the latest D-SLRs with the same size sensors; plus, it's not like Fuji doesn't know sensors and imaging.

This is exciting.

P&S go for a G12.
You may miss the zoom when you don't have it. I wish Canon kept the time lapse feature on their G series cameras.

The limitation of a fixed focal length lens is more than acceptable for everything other than landscape and wildlife.

Most p&s zooms are not so great to begin with, its a compromise when you want something small yet high quality to carry around.
As of yet I have not made that compromise, I carry my DSLR everywhere I go when possible. It would be nice to have something smaller when lugging the big camera and big lenses just is not appropriate or perhaps even possible.

Besides, to have a P&S with large sensor + zoom lens, you might as well just go with a DSLR.. or m4/3.

P&S can either be: small sensor + zoom lens or large sensor + fixed lens. You can cheat the laws of physics.

Well, that's what I was hoping for ;)

In all seriousness, does adding a mount for interchangeable lenses really necessitate a larger body or much more room between the sensor and lens mount?

I still think this camera with one or two other lenses would make the ultimate travel kit.

Leica seems to have done it with the M9...but as usual, they're in a different price-league.

A zoom lens for a large sensor, you need more glass, and that equates to larger, heavier lenses.

So to responding to a previous post - expecting a typical P&S styled 10x optical zoom in a P&S camera with large sensor is a bit silly.

The M9 is pure luxury and a fondler's dream.. not too sure about its durability, since the M8 did not fare too well.

Ywen,

I'm not asking for a zoom; I'm simply asking for interchangeable. As I stated before, I'd be happy with the 35mm, a 50mm, and an 85mm. To be even more clear, I'm looking for prime lenses not zooms.

The Sony NEX series is what you need then...

Small body w/ an APS-C sensor plus lens interchangeability.. no optical VF and physical dials though, but a steal compared to the Leica digi-M

Sorry, I just can't see spending a lot of money on a camera that is so limited.

I wouldn't mind using fixed length lenses as long as I could change between them but for a small pack around camera I wouldn't want to be limited to just a single normal lens.
