Third choice... if you are in really remote places where they don´t have the equipment to mount tubeless tires: steel split rims.

Very tough rims, although you´ll probably have to pick them up outside the US... DOT isn´t a fan of them...

I was forgetting about those. And those exactly we have.... Many will not agree, but we are happy as a dog.

Very interesting advice about the wheels.

Never been on an expedition like you all are experienced with and are experiencing.... but on my land cruiser it came with OEM aluminum wheels. I have put 200,000 miles on them and been through some very ruff terrain with them without a single problem. Bashed them on rocks, rode short distances on trails with a flat tire, replaced tires on the trails, ect... and no problems.

A rather verbose and photo lacking post :)

Well, hello ExPo. It has been a while so a quick recap is in order.

As some of you may know, we left our home in California on July of 2009 and spent a few months driving around the U.S., Mexico and all of Central America. Well "a few months" was actually 15 months! Our original plan was a drive to Ushuaia, Argentina in 1 year. So after 15 months on the road and not even in South America we needed to decide what to do. In October we left the Landcruiser in Costa Rica and flew to California to ponder our options.

After 2 months in California we cut the few remaining ties with properties, belongings and jobs we had and decided to turn our trip of a lifetime into our life... Sounds weird, no? Well we are not entirely sure what it means, but for now it means 2 more years on the road!!!

Now we have been back in Central America 2 weeks, the Landcruiser is in a container en route to Cartagena, Colombia and the next phase of our little expedition/life. South America here we come!

Our website/blog has been very neglected and in fact we toyed with the idea of dropping it altogether, but we have started receiving complaints from friends, family and followers of the blog.... It is very reassuring and satisfying to know that someone (other than our Moms) reads our stuff. So we will pick it up again; however, we post a lot more often on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks very much to Expeditions West, Expedition Portal, Campinglab, Bajarack and all the ExPo members that have encouraged us and helped us

Well, at long last a new (very verbose) post on our website... We made it to South America!

Quick video on our trip to the Port of Colon in Panama

That was not the deepest water crossing we have been through, but the semi driving at us was really cool... I guess you had to be there...

I am always amazed when we re-pack at how much crap we have...

We have been in Colombia for a couple of weeks now. As some of you may now; Colombia is in the middle of a crisis due to an unexpectedly long and heavy rain season. There are as many (probably more) than 150,000 people displaced from their homes by flooding and as I type it is raining pretty heavily. Dry season usually starts around the end of November.
I hate to mention how this will affect our trip as so many are homeless while we are for all intents and purposes on vacation, but the rain HAS and WILL continue to affect our visit to Colombia. We will be posting frequently on Facebook (mostly for our Mom's, but...)

Overland Live Webcast

Just a quick reminder that our next Overland Live webcast is scheduled for Sunday 9th January.

Our guests this week are Luis and Lacey and their current trip across the Americas. It should be an interesting talk as the couple are still travelling in their Land Cruiser.

You can register for the event here: http://lostworld.doattend.com

Plus read more about their trip: http://lostworldexpedition.com

The webcast requires a broadband connection and will take place at 7pm GMT.

Cheers,
Martin

We are quite nervous about our Overland Live webcast... It is hard to follow up something like Federik's trip.

We are going to be going off grid for the next few days. We are going to try to drive to the Guajira Peninsula in northeastern Colombia. The rainy season has been extremely wet and destructive, so we may not be able to make it to our final objective Punta Gallina.

We are going to be trying to come up with an entertaining presentation for Sunday, but we would really like some input. If you have any questions, comments or ideas please feel free to write here or a pm.

Thank you so much and please "attend" our Overland Live session.
