New engine for Fuso FG in 2011

Mitsubishi is talking about a new 3.0L turbodiesel for trucks in North America, and presumably world-wide eventually. The engine is described as a lightweight, twin turbocharged, direct injected Bluetec unit that can rev higher than the current engine. No power or torque numbers were mentioned.

The new engine will be paired with a dual clutch six speed automatic transmission. This is reported to be the first dual clutch auto in a commercial truck. The wet clutches never need to be replaced, lowering operating costs.

The combination of 3.0L engine and dual clutch automatic is reported to achieve a 10% fuel savings, compared to the current 4.9L diesel.

While the report says this engine and transmission have been under development for 30 years by Mitsubishi, I have to think that Mercedes (which owns a majority of Mitsubishi now) played a role in the new drivetrain.

Just a quick note. Details are emerging, and are limited, and while I cant say much at this point, I can however say that this is not a Mercedes influenced or designed engine. There is another main player involved in the development of this engine, however it is not who you would expect. Fiat has played a major role in the development of this engine. We are very excited about it. Please keep checking back for more details.

The Fuso USA web page about the new drivetrain says the new dual clutch automatic is an integral part of the package. I guess this means the FG model will now be sold with automatic only.

The web page notes a new "creep forward" mode that makes it easier to control the vehicle at low speeds. This could be useful for off-road use.

I wonder if Fuso re-designed the FG package so the frame will be the same as the rear-wheel drive FE?

I can't imagine that US Fuso dealers will be happy to include that little nugget of information in their promotional materials.
