I'm looking at this on Monday. Would have been Thanksgiving morning but the keys are with the owner (its a dealer) and he left out of town until Monday. Very good odds I will end up buying it. <fingers crossed>

that's awesome, and it looks to be in great shape. Already has a bed, too!

Good luck, xj_m!

Very stout looking van, good luck with your purchase. As always, leery of the miles with the older odometers that turn back to zero after 99,999. Some quick and dirty ways to check for miles - wear on brake pedal pad, worn paint on the rockers where stepped on to get into the van (the paint is gone in the pics), seat upholstery towards the doors (looks good! reupholstered?), and suspension wear (king pins - easy check, tie rods, leaf spring gouges, etc), worn lettering and paint on interior parts that get handled a lot, rock chips on exterior, etc.

A steering stabilizer is often done as a stop gap measure to cure a wobbly front end. As you can see in the pics, the front axle u-bolts are splayed.

Might send a picture to the appropriate people or municipality in Cottonwood, AZ, see what they say about it. Chances are, you can find someone that knows all about this van.

Being red, looks fire department. Maybe a fire line ambulance that didn't see many patients, but might have been driven to every large brush, wilderness, and forest fire for twenty years. Unknown history...

Price is decent on a great van though! And again, good luck with your purchase.

haha, thanks TacoDoc!

Thanks for the advice Terrainist. Definitely not my first time at the rodeo. I think I have bought more old vehicles than new ones (about a 2:1 ratio and that's 38 vehicles owned). Definitely going to check it over very well. My guess is the van was white and the outside was painted red before being delievered. From careful looking at the pics, the "wear" near the door step looks to be the red worn off with the white showing underneith. That would be very common and looks about right for this mileage. Seats look to be original, having a set in my garage that look about the same but are even older. I guess we'll see on Monday. I'll post up one way or another.

Well, today was the day I was going to look at the van. Got there and was happy to find it was as good or better than expected based on the pictures. It has WAY more storage than the pics make it look. There is a sliding door behind the pass. side seat so you can close off the back area. For a carburated 1980 vehicle, it started up easily and once it warmed up a couple minutes, was ready to drive. No sure what to expect, it drove very well, easy to steer but did suffer from bump steer inherant to an inverted T design steering linkage and leaf springs.

Overall for a 30 year old rig, it looked to be very well taken care of. It was part of a Fire Dept. and doubt it got a lot of "back seat passengers" over the years. The outside access to an enclosed storage (originally had O2 tank and radio gear) would be great for propane tanks and anything else you wanted to keep "outside" the living area.

This rig would be sitting in my driveway had it not been for one thing, which had nothing to do with the condition of the van. Because vans have the engine offset to the pass. side, it leaves a much smaller area for the legs and foot area. After 5 minutes of having her left leg pushed over because of this lack of room, she tearfully said that knowing how much I wanted this, it was not going to work if I wanted her to join me on any trips.

I knew that was the end for me as I want her to be comfortable as well. Paul, the guy I was working with, is a very stand up guy and I would not hesitate to buy from him. He had another guy call who really wanted it but said I had first dibs and would even honor the price had anyone bid higher than the starting bid.

That all said, anyone who is looking for a 4x4 van to start a camper build, for $4000 you are NOT going to find one nicer and more setup. Hope to see someone on ExPo get this rig.

Be sure you check the compression on the engine- those older vans with the large engines had a bad tendency to overheat. Back when our ambulances had gasoline engines it was common during the summer for the passenger to head to the rear of the truck while the driver jumped out and opened the hood to try to let the heat escape. We ran Type 1s (truck cab with a box on the back) and had issues with the 460s, but the convalescent services ran vans and they were constantly overheating.

Hopefully it'll work fine for you, but if you plan to drive it slow offroad in AZ you'll probably need to upgrade the radiator and cooling system.

Wow! Sure hopes it works out for you and is what it seemed to be when we looked at it.

Off topic, I ended up buying a CUCV M1010 ambulance, which being truck based, gave the wife and I lot of leg room up front.

Post up pics when you get it.

Thanks for your imput ,I bought it for hauling my mx bike ,mostlly same day races but often times need to drive day before and sleep over for early race start.longest stay in van might be 3 days .
With that said,my build plan is to transport bikes inside, sleeping area with fidge and cooking stove.
I'm an auto technician by trade and I consider myself as a decent fabricator,
however I'm out of my leage when it comes to comuters and posting pick's so the pictures requested might be slow in comming.
