I use one of these, works pretty good. Its still the only thing I use at home and away. I'd like to upgrade someday but this has been working for the last 8yrs or so with nearly daily use. Get the stainless version if you get one though, and some extra gaskets.

Unfortunately, it's true. But, that give you a perfect excuse to visit the local roaster twice per month. :victory:

That is true in a sense. Oxidation is what causes coffee to go stale, just like with wine. When it is kept in an oxygen free environment, it won't go stale. Fortunately when coffee is roasted it gives off CO2 so if it packaged well right after roasting it will stay fresh.

Medaglia D'Oro

I did mention my almost decade old Medaglia. http://www.medagliadoro.com/products.htm
which I do not think I have ever actually drank. Used it as a pick me up out of the palm of my hand a few times dry so as to keep driving a little later.

Getting to an Oxygen poor level that can be opened and closed multiple times gets to be the issue. You can slow it if you make it cold or freeze it which also affects freshness. Have not been many places that I could not get somewhat freshly roasted beans and if not I go without or lower my standards. Before the gasp, suits my body well to go with out every once and a while for an indiscriminate period of time. Then at least I know I can go w/o if needed.

I have a french press attachment that folds and deploys inside my nalgene. Its pretty fricken sweet, they used to sell them at REI but I can't find them anymore.
Lucky! It's called a Press-bot and I was looking all over for one months ago. I totally forgot about it until now, thanks for reminding me...They're pretty hard to find.

I used a Big Sky Bistro for years (til I ran it over) -simple french press mug more durable and works better than the Bodum mug. Ordering a new one soon.
Also have brewed cowboy coffee directly in the mug-easy and hits the spot when I want some serious coffee.
The Jetboil Java also is an amazing package!

Yes you have about 2 days from the time of roasting to take advantage of the outgassing. Just be sure to use a check valve in the packaging, otherwise it will blow up like a balloon.

The check valve is also what lets the oxygen out when it is displaced by the CO2.

Just be aware that once that package is opened, you are back at square one (with ~2 weeks until the coffee loses its soul).

This:

In 14 cup. Gives me a couple cups of coffee and fills my ancient glass lined Thermos.

I also use a Melitta 1 cup cone filter, and this

for filling my Thermos when I happen to have fancy coffee.
I rarely use the filters, though, and I'll probably pass them on to friends soon.

Honestly, I think coffee will go south quicker than that. When I buy the good stuff (Stumptown), I notice a difference between the first pot and the last from the 12oz bag. I think that it starts to fade around a week out from opening the bag.

This is mine. Boil some water, pour it over some freshly roasted coffe beans from Old Bisbee Roasters, and wait five minutes. Just a little slice of heaven in the haven of the outdoors.
