Boonie's Build.

Boonie's '96 Tacoma SAS Build.

Hey Guys, I'm new here but not to the world of offroad. :victory:

I figure i'd share my truck and some plans and add to this thread as things progress or digress... It's probably not going to be setup for the month long expeditions but I do 2-3 day trips with it.

It's a '96 Tacoma x-cab 4x4, 2.7L with 200k miles on it.

Things done to it:
-Allpro 3" lift kit front adj. coils.
-Allpro 3" rear leaf spring kit with front mount relocated for longer springs.
-Allpro Rock slider kit, going to repositioned, previous owner had them put on before me.
-Diff drop kit. (it's this silly spacer kit to relieve some CV operating angle.)
-32x11.5x15 BFGs with soon to be black crawler wheels.
-Detroit True-Trac rear LSD.
-Custom tree rash and dents.

Things I plan to do to it:
Axle Parts (Bought):
- '85 Toy axle w/ '98 E-Locker
- Stock Axle Set
- Knuckle Rebuild Kit (figure $150)
- IFS outers
- MC Hi-steer
- MC Backing Plate Eliminators

- Used Aisin Locking Hubs
- Used Toyota Knuckle/Spindle outers
- (2) Solid pinion spacers

- (2) 5.29 Gear Sets and Master Install Kits

Other Parts (Bought):

- IFS Steering Box
- MC Rear shackle hanger
- 3/4 Drop Steering Arm (traded my flat arm)
- Top shift t-case
- RUF's already setup
- Allpro 1.5" Spacers
- Extended Thread lug nuts
- W56 Transmission
- MC MC07 doubler
- Top Shift T-case
- TG T-100 oilpan conversion
- TG Tacoma PS hose kit
- TG Frame braces
- 4runner E-Locker rear axle 4.10s

Here's one of it's more character defining moments:

Ya! You got it installed then? cool!

Ya, Mine works really well in snow. I haven't had any real issues with mine yet, maybe because it's in the rear and not the front where it gets turning action also... Mine will actually chirp on pavement if i turn it sharp like a spooled rear would. Ya the LSDs weren't intended for rock-crawling! I remember my last one, an Eaton Positrac in a S-10 rearend. I got the tire pressed against a sand bank on maybe a +/-30* tilt and incline and couldnt go anymore, the LSD didnt have enough grip to keep moving me forward. But the full spool on the other hand.....that'd get you in trouble! ha ha.

ya i had by diffs build with an open rear lsd in front and 5.29's by ecgs about a week after u shipped the tru trac to me. im starting to get more and more into rocks as thats what most of my buddies have there sas toyotas set up for and the open rear is really holding me back so i guess im gunna have to get an arb when funds allow. i had a lockrite and blew it up taking out the whole diff and carrier so i have no faith in lunchbox style lockers anymore.

You need to edit that to say you have no faith in LOCK-RITE diffs. If Aussie locker ever makes one for the 8.4" rear. I'd get that.

actually my buddy had his aussie blow apart on the same trip as my rear blew.
and the next week i witnessed another lockwrong fail on the trail

it will either get an arb or an elocker. im done with everything else. ive seen way to many failures. i have a buddy running 37inch irocs with elockers front and rear with no problems so far

Time to Update!

Ok, I need to get this thread up to date!

Prepare for multiple posts full of pics with things referencing the past cross-posted from another forum! It's been over a year since i started this project now! Amazing how time flies. I'll try and put a date to when each update happened.

Alright, well I started on my winch bumper a little bit, i didn't have as much time into it as i'd like but I have a couple pics to get this ball rolling.

I got the main front bracket cut to length, the winch plate cut to length and the tube bent/cut to length. That's about it. :p I am going to drill holes to bolt it to the two front holes on the frame for now, then final weld plates onto the ends/sidecaps. I think this setup will be tucked up fairly tight to the truck, I plan to cut and relocate the stamp metal in front of the radiator to gain some much need clearance.:saw:

Taking the front bumper off is progress right?!!?

Here's kind of how it will look:

So the winch mount is finsihed and hopefully on it's way to be powdercoated this week. I ended up deviated from my CAD plans when i found out just how much of my stock bumper i was going to have to cut out. So I notched the 2x3 tube to lower the winch down 1 1/2" or so and narrowed the support hoop.

I also rotated the winch clutch handle 36 degrees to be outside the bumper. And took off the winch cable.....

Redoing my original plan:

Almost there...

the winch wasn't bolted for this pic, but i think i coulda shortened the distance between the fairlead and winch up a bit....
