XJ Diesel swap options?

Hi Gang!

I'm wondering about a diesel conversion for my rather heavy AX15 '99 XJ.
What is out there? I'd like to keep it as KISS as possible...

yeah, sadly nothing in the USA is that easy.....unless you start with an older diesel Cherokee :)

If you can spend the money, I think one of the best swaps would be the 4.07 MWM diesel from south america. They are passenger side turbo so the exhaust runs down the bare side of the undercarriage without a crossover. They are about the right size, power, etc. They are a 2.8L mechanically injected 4cyl. They can make some decent power with light mods. They where a factory application for the south american S10. They are suppose to have a 90 degree GM bell-housing pattern in that application. Adapting to this from the AX15 would be easy enough.

Just an idea.

Do you have any more info (as in links) to that engine?

I found this guy's MB 300 TD swap - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P6Dg7vflKg&feature=related"]YouTube - Jeep Cherokee diesel conversion 4x4[/ame] it doesn't look too bad, I think a bit under powered. Any idea if you can get more power out of the MB w/o hurting it?

I'm a neweb when it comes to diesels! I just spent some time with a guy with a NPR Isuzu truck and an old MB 300 both running on veg oil and I came away very impressed to say the least...

The benz om617 would be a great swap.

They're a little low on power, but the torque is great, and it's at such a low RPM.

There's a company making the adapter plate for the ax-15.

I would do it, but emissions would be a HUGE issue in CA.

Check out the 4btswaps forum. I know atleast a few xj /mj guys have done a 4bt swap out of a bread truck.

Here's a great example:

Look on NAXJA forums and you can find a ton of info. Unibody trucks are not too happy with a lot of torque... there will be some stiffining that will need to take place along with this swap. When done right the out come is :wings: Look on youtube for some diesel powered XJ's to see whats being done.

My truck is registered in Florida, so no problem with a sniffer test:smiley_drive:

Yep, I found the guy with the adapter plate, looks good. I am, however more than a bit concerned about the power output of the om617. My rig is pretty heavy with a RTT, fridge, winch bumper Jerry cans, drawers, tools, etc. I'm wondering how much the power can be upped w/o hurting the built proof nature of the om617...

My county doesn't smog either. However... if CA changed it's mind and started mandating smog ever 2 years like when I lived near San Francisco, i'd be royally f-d.
