The standard Wilson through the roof mount is totally different from an NMO mount. They do however share the same size hole so you can swap them out.
You called it. But I was able to get a shorty Comet dual band antenna (14" or so) that screwed right on, and an adapter for the other end for my current Yaesu HT. Result is quick hookup without having to change mounts. I can revisit when I get a dedicated truck radio in place of the HT.
I'll probably put the CB on the rear tire rack and sacrifice some range for convenience. That's about as far apart as I can manage.
I have no problem drilling holes in the roof for a quality installation, and I absolutely hate the afterthought look of clamp on mounts, regardless of how they're done. Everything is a sacrifice, of course.
Funny thing- I went to the Ham shop and explained my problem. The Ham guy just laughed and pointed to the parking lot where every single vehicle had a little farm of antennas, each about 6" from the next one. Maybe I've been overthinking this!
