Is there any way you could block the video so people in California can't see it? It is just too damn depressing. Maybe the ultimate perfect swap. I am going to have to unsubscribe to this thread. I just can't take it.

Thanks guys. We're filming a before and after video for the youtube channel so there'll be a test drive run on there. We rarely get stuff from Japan as it was "dicey" even before the disaster. Rolling back odometers, junk engines that dont run being sold as running setups, and people taking your money and not delivering a product unfortunately goes with the territory over there. We have our guys that we use exclusively and they've been great to us through the years. This engine pictured has 3,200 miles on it so we can get them with extremely low mileage. A turn-key conversion is approx $22k depending on options (auto/manual 4wd/2wd etc). Definitely one of the best swaps one can do. You should see one of these in an FjCruiser...

Actually, the last two D-4D's we did went to CA. They reported ZERO issues registering and smogging these. All of these engines have lean burn technology and oxidation catalysts so they are VERY clean burning by design. With the right fuel combo, you can pass any smog test they throw at it.

I am sorry. I can't believe that. That engine does not come in a Toyota that is currently for sale or used in California and that would be the first item that DMV and the referee would use to turn it down. The only way this could be done was if it was on a vehicle that was too old to have to go through the smog tests. California hates diesels. I have a close friend that works at Gale Banks and I hear the stories all the time aout the new smog laws. Would you PM me the contact info of the people who you did this work for please? I have done several swaps and have built kit cars that required certification in California and I thought I knew all the rules. I am very interested.

This is why I love the old saying "he who says it cannot be done must not interrupt the one doing it". We HAVE done several for folks in CA. Why your friend has issues I'm am unsure. If you search around on google, there are tons of guys that have swapped their gas engines for diesels in CA. If you really sit down and read the EPA certification laws front to back, you will find some interesting answers. At the end of the day, due to every jurisdiction having different standards, and for the simple fact that we dont have time to research every nuance, we ask all prospective customers to do their own research as to the legalities in their area. For privacy reasons, we do not give out customer information. What I can do is if you are wanting to get on the list for a swap, I can forward your information to some customers in CA that we've done conversions for and put the ball in their court.

Works for me

This is not a EPA situation. The rules for engine swaps a very clear in California. I am trying to help you. If you make a statement that this is legal in California, someone pays you for the swap and then can't get a smog certificate, you are on the hook my friend. No disclaimer on your receipt will protect you from a negligence law suit. Send my contact info to the people you have done in California. I will then list the how and why they were able to accomplish the swap in California.

We specifically do not imply legality. I simply said that we have done them for people in CA and they reported no issues. This has been our experience with it. In fact, we put all of our policies in writing and make all of our customers sign an acknowledgement of these policies. We intend our conversions to be used for "Off Road use only". If the customer wishes to use it for highway use, then they are certainly within their rights to do so. But they are responsible for all registration etc. required to put the vehicle into service. If you're looking for a "This is how you circumvent the laws How-To", I'm shocked you haven't been able to find it. Now, we HAVE done them for folks in CA. They also reported no issues registering them. Am I going to tell you how to defeat the laws there? No...

Very cool, but probably cost prohibitive for most peops. Might as well add the Hilux frame to the "wanted swaps" list.

Yes, there are those that talk about what cannot be done and those who spend the energy just doing it.

I could be legally driving a brand-new HiLux in Prescott tomorrow. It is not that difficult, but requires doing some research. I have been driving a 2007 110 Td5 in Prescott for a few years. Again, completely legal and no vin swaps.

Any chance you can do this with a 5speed Manual??? neat swap, but the Slush-box just ruins it for me... I LOVE the D4d, though, such a great motor.

Cheers

Could you point some of us in that research direction? Pretty please with sugar on top.

As I keep on hitting deadends. Maybe have a deployed military or working abroad buddy buy then ship it over?

Is it feesable to import a brandnew HiLux to AZ and legally registure it? Of course it might be cheaper to simply do a D4D swap into a late model Tacoma, could cover some of the cost by selling the 4.0, what are those engines going for anyway, $4'000?

Awesome work! I dream of have one of those in my truck. Unfortunately at $20K+ and no guarantee of getting it registered, it will always remain a dream. Unless you want me to demo for you... in that case I would take my chances with finding loopholes. :sombrero:

Edit: Holy crap! Just reviewed the numbers from that thing... It will eat CV's for breakfast!

Absolutely, they come with either a 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual.

Do the halfcuts come with the transmission?

Might be cool to do a a first generation Tundra with a D4D and a 5 Speed manual, as you can pick up a 1st gen Tundra pretty cheap.
