Anyone Here have the Tacoma rusted frame perforation.

My 97 Tacoma has the inevitable perforated frame. I have an appointment for them to spray some rustproofing stuff but no need now, it rusted clean through the inside drivers side rear axle area and some on the passenger side. Had it inspected a few years back and passed. It's true rust never sleeps, and really just a matter of time before it shows up.

Toyota will be buying it back, but has anyone had serious 2nd thoughts of buying another Tacoma given their frame rust issues.

Since I have about $12k to use, i'm looking seriously at a Ford or GMC, or even a Tundra - something fullsize. I seem to have outgrown the tacoma.

I will try to get some photos up. it's pretty nasty stuff and Toyota is pretty lucky no one has died because of this.

Bummer, interested to see some photos. I'm hoping that in another 10-12 years when the frame of my Tacoma starts to disappear they'll still be buying them back. My truck has made a few trips to the beach, and we get an occasional snow, but I've always been obsessive about trying to clean away the salt. Still though, I'm amazed at the amount of corrosion underneath a 4.5 year old truck.... I have a 97 wrangler out front with less rust on it, and it lived in the OBX for 2 years.

FYI, the frame (manufactured by Dana) rust issue was fixed after it was discovered for the units that left the factory. BTW, the issue was caused by the paint/anti-rust treatment, not by bad steel or such. I'm not sure if the error was made by Toyota's specs to Dana, or in Dana's manufacturing process.

For those on the road, Toyota has mitigated their liability with and aggressive campaign to contact owners, inspect the frames, apply the undercoating, replace the frame or buy the truck back at a good price. You've got to say that when they find a problem, they fix it.

I read about the frame rust issue before I bought mine (used, 6 yr old). Fortunately, it spent it's time with the PO in north central Texas where they don't salt the roads, don't have salt water, and don't have humidity. The frame is as solid as the day it came out of the factory. It has been treated, and I clean it every once in awhile with a hose... I don't expect to ever have problems with it.

Personaly, I have no concerns about buying any Toyota. They are well built and when Toyota does make a mistake, they fix it (look up the 3VZE headgasket recall/extended warranty)

PMCLynn85,

FYI, the extended warranty and recall was set for 15 years. http://pressroom.toyota.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=1406

Although mine is an '04, I had to have mine inspected last spring. It passed with flying colors. Thee inspector said that it probably helped more than anything that I actually take mine offroad. They coated it with some crap and said I had a 15 year warranty on it.
