Modifications/preventive measures for 12+ day desert expedition...?

I have planned to go on a 12+ day desert expedition in a very remote area of the Sahara desert. This would be 6+ months for now so I have time to prepare and import anything I may need.

Here is a map to give a general idea of how remote this area is.

This is on a 2011 Wrangler Unlimited Egyptian edition.

I am looking for info regarding what spare parts I should take with me. Parts to change, modifications to make, general watch outs... Any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated!

I know we have to carry one way or another about 25 20liter/5gal jerrry cans. Are there any 2nd gas tank options available?
2 spare wheels.
3 liters of water per day per person.

Thank you!

For desert driving here in Australia it's recommended to take 7lt of water per person per day, agreed that 3lt is very tight especially if you have problems. If people die in the desert here it's either because they left the vehicle or ran out of water and drank the radiator water or washer water.

Im interested to see what comes of this also, as I live in the desert, and tend to want to explore out here.

Good luck on your expedition, albeit 6 months in the future. :D

It's one of the reasons I just carry drinkng water, I dont both with glycol etc, at least that way it can double as topping up the radiator or drinking. I do have glycol in the radiator though.

A good tire patch kit, sealant, on board air.

A good first-aid kit including any special meds you require.

EPIRB or equivalent.

Got a SPOT and will have a Sat phone.

I passenger. Yea will def take out the rear seats. Will carry a spare wheel inside.
$1000 for just a 20gal tank.... yikes. German Jerry cans cost me $25... I am thinking a tank to flatten out where the rear seats were and holds a lot more gas....

I dont think those pull pals work very well in super soft sand.. and i dont have a winch since other than a pull pal or ground anchor there is usually no place to tie one to...

I'd be bringing everything you might need to repair cooling problems:

  • Top and bottom rad hoses
  • heater hoses
  • coolant
  • stuff to patch small holes in radiator
  • serpentine belt

I've gone on long boondoggles and lived out of my Jeep, but it's always been wooded areas and often solo. The winch has come in handy.
Only ran low on fuel twice. I don't like carrying cans if I can help it; I like a second tank or bigger primary. I think the safety aspect mitigates the expense.

As far as exotic supplies go, spread them around among your group. No need to duplicate many of the items if only one truck at a time would be using them.

Thats per vehicle... 12 days with out crossing any type of civilization. Easy go though 80 liters of gas a day of mostly non stop driving... Especially if its in sand dunes.
Great googley moogley.
What's that weigh? How will you fit anything else?
With water, food, and your passenger, you're going to be pretty well over your GVWR...

25x20lt Jerrys, that's around 500kg of fuel not including the Jerry cans, and you're talking of having some of it in the Jeep. There is no way I'd do any sort of travel with fuel stored internally let alone 500lt!!!!! for those that dont work in lt's that's about 7 full tanks of fuel!!!

To be honest I dont think the trip is feasible if you need to carry that much extra fuel, can you organise any sort of fuel dump. For remote desert travel here fuel is dumped by a supply truck and the 44Gallon drums are marked, everyone knows the next person wont make it out if they take their fuel so even though it's a trust system it seems to work. The other option is to get a supply truck to come along otherwise in the desert heat you are going to have a convoy of mobile bombs filled with fuel and fuel vapour (those jerrys will release vapour and you'll have a jeep full of it)

Cheers
