What type of benefits does the cowl coming off the left wing of some military defenders provide? Also, what would this piece be called?

It´s called a snow cover and prevents snow from clogging the air grill on top of the fender.

There are replicas on the market, too, in different designs and qualities..

Someone in the UK is making GRP versions. IF you keep your eye on Ebay, they sometimes go for around $40 not sure what shipping would be like. They can be very expensive also as Robert points out.

thanks for the responses. I think I'll just stick to using a broom to clear the snow.

Everything made in Germany for Rovers is unreasonably expensive. I think the Blanchard covers are around $90 shipped. I intend to get one soon, and they have left hand drive in stock last time I checked in.

Again the weirdest thing about that german shop is, those are original, unused, snow covers and he actually sells them at that price :Wow1:
