What is the point of Expo graphic wraps?

As I've posted before, I'm an old codger and don't understand social media (or even building the "brand"). What is the point of expensive Expo style graphic wraps? To look like a advertisement? Conspicuously display your wealth? Declare your tribal affiliation? Inquiring minds want to know?

I know a few people who have some commercial operations with sponsors - so business and sponsor logos make sense - but I don't see many non-commercial vehicles that are wrapped.

What exactly is a "expo style" graphic wrap? Is there a new trend? What's going on? I think I missed it (not surprising) . . .

That's sort of like asking what's the point of paint a vehicle any color other than white, or why vehicles have chrome on them: because some people like the way it looks and not necessarily to impress others.

I've also heard that vinyl wraps can be used to protect the paint from light scratches.

I will agree with the protection thing..
I had a partial wrap on my FJ Cruiser and when I peeled it off the paint under was very very well protected.

I think, in the case of some folks, having a topo wrap, or a mountain-scape silhouette stems out of the desire to drive something that not only can take them on an adventure, but also speaks adventure. If you check out the Trek or G4 Discos from Land Rover, they came all graphic'd up and folks would pay a premium for them.

Plays also to a sense of style, and as mentioned above, can be used to protect the paint from light scratches!

Snorkel, I'm with you. Some of the stickers/wraps people put on their vehicles make them look garish and desperate for attention. The only 'wrap' I've seen that I thought actually had a useful purpose (beyond advertisement) was a general topo map on a hood which the driver used during rest periods to conceptualize the next leg in his route. I'd do that. All the other cheeseball billboards would make me feel like I'm desperate to prove something rather than simply letting my accomplishments speak for themselves.

scratch protection ??? .... whats wrong with scratches ?!?

IMHO a rig that shows a couple (or a lot:Wow1:) of "battle scares" and "brush pin stripes" is more believable as a "real" expo rig then a oh so cool wrap that shows tales of what could be done with the rig (if the owner would not be scared to make it dirty or scratch it up) :p

btw there is also a legal problem with stickers and wraps on larger rigs;
any kind of "Advertising" (regardless if you actually get compensated for it or not) is a very easy way to get in a lot of problems with the DOT, especially if your rig is registered as an RV and you drive it without CDL (commercial driver license).

i learned that with my first Truck conversion :Wow1: ... i was lucky the friendly DOT officer who stopped me was in a good mood and let me go with the promise to peel the stickers off asap.

I feel ya man, I don't get them either. Unless I was sponsored, or it was a "work truck" for a business I wouldn't even have the smallest of stickers on it.

But, some of them look good.

Don't you see the irony there? Caring that your truck is "more believable as real expo rig" is just as vain than someone that wants a pretty scratch free truck. Maybe even more vain, because I want a scratch free truck just because I like that look (and couldn't care less what others think), but you are obviously trying to impress others with your scratches.

Maybe the next step in expo fashion will be to take a metal leaf rake down the side of mall cruisers.

I think it's generational. My fellow geezer cronies and I all have a mindset of. "If you ain't paying me. I'm not advertising for you."

My son's generation seems to gain an association with a themed product. Clothing, equipment etc. By showing the brand they are part of that tribe.
