Surprised about you friend experiencing problems with the finish not aging well (assume your are referring to the exterior finish). I have a 10+ year old James Baroud that is doing well. I do wax it "generously" every year, which I believe is helpful in maximizing the life of the exterior finish.

Looks like Road Armor - very nice if you have potential for animal strikes. Maybe not the most aerodynamic, but it certainly looks effective!
