Lee's '04 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and Radica MoonLander camping shell

Yeah I’ve always had a grab bag of some sort depending on where and when I was, but all based on being immobilized for whatever reason, not for the instance of suddenly finding myself riding Halley’s Comet at 70mph. I’m going to look up those element extinguishers.

Wow you’re lucky that injector line didn’t fail while on a hard pull with the turbo glowing red. Glad you salvaged part of the trip and the hit on the repair wasn’t too bad.

    Paralysis by analysis on purchase

I am fortunate to have both a Chev 2500HD with my pop-up northstar more or less permanently mounted and hooked to my boat or atv trailer, as well as a supercab F150 with 5.0 and FX4 which is my daily and work truck. If the truck is doubling as a daily driver, then the F150 is the easier truck...

What new in new in personal rescue devices

I have an inreach that has served well, but the iPhone satellite text service has been working well enough that I suspended my garmin account. When away from recharge capability, the inreach or similar still rules.

    '97 Northstar TC650 project

Great rescue job. I really like my TC650. That will be very rewarding to get into use.

    Dedicated Snow Tire

I've been running back and forth on the pipelines between northern alberta and the bc coast for the last number of years year-round and have settled on the factory studded Nokian LT3. The Toyo WLT and Blizzak are slightly better on highway packed and glazed snow, but they wear far too quickly...

Reasonable Mods For Carrying Heavy Things

Haha I’m in the dump camper camp as well. Alternative is passengers can walk? (leave some water!!) Seriously though, being 10% over on a domestic one ton is inconsequential if truck is in decent shape overall. I’m at 10,000 lbs on a Chev 2500HD before cramming two quartered up moose into the...

Carpet or No Carpet in Truck?

With vinyl floors in very wet and snowy conditions, if you do not have some sort of tray to catch water, it will run under the plastic door sill, and then wick back through and soak the underlay under the floor where it will stay trapped until you peel it up and expose it to heat and dry air...

Lee's '04 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and Radica MoonLander camping shell

I am also of the “two is one, one is none” school of thought when it comes to spare tires on certain trips, but as pointed out above, we all have different conditions and risk tolerances. My solution is to carry a LT255/80/17 Toyo on a steelie as a spare for the LT285/70/17’s on the truck to...

Lee's '04 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and Radica MoonLander camping shell

Thanks for all this, it has been useful as I have been contemplating something smaller than my Northstar TC650 and bigger than my Leer shell. I was in a similar boat, I needed to replace a miled out 2003 2500HD with a 6.0, but I just wasn't going to pay covid prices and luckily stumbled into an...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

The discussion on re-gearing is interesting, particularly on how the newer 10 speeds are more forgiving. In my own opinion, torque multiplication happening at the rear axle is torque multiplication that doesn’t happen between the crankshaft and axle input, and consequently should generate less...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

I think your 8.5mpg and 11mpg estimates are pretty realistic, once you average in the slow speed stuff. Then it just becomes $/year or $/lifetime of vehicle. There’s no hill that I know of west of SK that a 7.3 won’t maintain speed with only 12k and it doesn’t really get that hot often...

Either ford or gmc, Crew cab ,long bed8’,4x4, v-8, gas, must have mods or nearly must have for hiway ride and stability

With the payload capacity you’re talking I think you have no choice but to stay with E rated. I’ve settled on Toyo C/T most of the year and Nokian LT3 in the winter. That said, I have Michelin AT2 E rated on my work F150 and have been very impressed with the highway ride and durability on...

Either ford or gmc, Crew cab ,long bed8’,4x4, v-8, gas, must have mods or nearly must have for hiway ride and stability

For stability and ride comfort with a 1300-1400 lb load, you won’t get much more stability and ride comfort from a 172” wheelbase truck than how it comes off the lot. Maybe change the tires to suit your intended use and terrain.

    DIY truck bed plate

Yes, that’s the stuff. That pic is a bit misleading as they cross cut it to show the profile. Normal 3/4 or 5/8 sheathing will have male edge on a short and long side and a female edge on the opposite long and short sides. For your use it won’t really matter, just use some sheathing...
