2016 Titan XD Pro4x build and travels

I thought I would start a thread here as I work on and build up my new to me, 2016 Nissan Titan XD. I just traded my 2022 Gladiator Rubicon for it a couple of months ago and I am VERY happy so far. After looking at several standard ARE / DCU type commercial campers I ended up finding an incredible deal on a 2024 Skinny Guy Camper Bare Bones in the next town over.

I figured I would post up a few quick pictures after moving over the camper, I was impressed at their system it only took us 30 minutes to move from one truck to the other.

I will fill in the details as I go, but previous owner already had installed, 2000 watt inverter, 140 amp hour lithium battery and 100 watt solar panel.

Just out of curiosity, why did you get rid of your Gladiator?
Towing the Aliner, the Gladiator was great, 14ish mpg, but when I came home and bought the travel trailer, it catches a lot more wind and my mpg dropped to 9 mpg. I figured a v8 will get that same mileage or probably better (3500 pound camper) I am expecting 12-14 mpg with the Titan but we will see.

I towed about 8-10k per year the last two years, so a 25% increase in mpg (9 mpg to 12 mpg) would be huge and any more is just a bonus.

The Gladiator is rated to tow 7700 and it will do it, but with coil springs in the rear, it just will not be happy about it. I like the trucks with leafs in rear, 3/4 ton (or Titan XD sorta 5/8) they really are built to tow.

So far I have just towed an hour to/from campsite, 65 mph on interstate, in TOW mode (overkill for 3500 pounds) and was only getting 8.5 mpg according to the dash computer. Of course that maybe inaccurate and will not really know until I go long distances, where I can measure a full tank at a time. Hoping I will end up closer to 12 mpg but that maybe just wishful thinking. My Gladiator also got about 8.x mpg at similar speeds pulling the same camper, was really thinking the v8 would not work as hard and lower rpms overall = better mpg. We shall see, headed out for our 5000+ mile trip to New England for the summer, will know a LOT more by the end of the summer.

I've got a 2018 Titan Pro4x with an AT Summit Topper. When I towed my 3500lbs travel trailer I averaged about 13.5 mpg. That was combined hwy and towing in the Rocky Mountains.

Just a follow up, 8-9 mpg is my standard number, this is towing 65 mph on highways (1900-2000 rpms) with the travel travel behind me. This includes my trip up to Maine this summer, to Texas and back and to Missouri and back. So about 8000 miles now of towing and trips.

I wish the rear springs had just a bit more umph in them, they squat with the Skinny Guy Camper(700 lbs or so), all my gear in the bed (150-200 pounds) and then the weight of the travel trailer, guessing 550ish tongue weight. It rides fine, just looks odd you can see it squat and I would assume my front lights are pointing up a bit more though I have not been getting flashed by oncoming traffic so maybe it is not as bad as it "looks."

Towed my 1987 Ford E-350 ambulance home on a deckover trailer, now THAT made it squat! I first loaded it facing forward and the weight just really had me worried so I only drove about 2 miles and pulled over and re-loaded it in reverse so more weight further back on the trailer. It did not "look" a lot better but I did feel the difference in how it was moving. Made it home safe.

Stayed in the Skinny Guy Camper several times now, either because we had a guest in our camper or just for a quick weekend. I really like that layout and been very happy. I think they have a real winner in their setup. No mods to it other than adding another LiPo battery so I have 240 amp hours now.

The Skinny Guy concept is cool, and I have spent a few nights in them at trade shows. I think they just came out a little behind, last I knew they were having trouble selling.

Solid product, though, and great ideas/designs.
