I've thought about building my wife's 2021 Tacoma. But it's not exactly small or light. And nearly everything needs to be upgraded to make it durable/reliable for rock crawling. Super Duty has all the hardware but it is bigger and heavier. Our SxS is fun (love the light weight) but prefer 4x4...
What do you think qualifies? Max weight? Max size? Minimum tire size? Curious your thoughts...
We used our 1998 Tacoma for years on the most difficult rock crawling trails in the Sierra Nevadas: Fordyce, Rubicon, Dusy, Barrett Lake and more. It was around 126" wheelbase. But it only had 4...
Funny thing... That was our original plan was to take the camper and camp near the mine. It was much less work without the camper (lots of trees/brush). We will do another mine exploration with the camper... :)
It's a gimmick. People think it's magic and it's not. It is automatically riding your brakes. This trick is fine for short descents but longer hills will heat up your brakes. Not to mention it is constantly running the ABS pump which can overheat as well. For short bursts it's fun. But not...
Order options seems to change by model. We ordered skid plates for $100. Hill assist is not good to depend on. Better to learn to drive. Those features can malfunction... Driver skill always works!
Traction control is the same deal vs locking diffentials. Not the same thing! :)
It is generally assumed that a Full Size truck is ONLY for hauling or towing. But is that really accurate? It seems that the Ford F250 Super Duty has all the components for a perfect rock crawler:
Powerful V8 Engine, Sterling 10.5” Full Float Rear Axle, Factory Rear Locking Differential, Dana...
I'd be concerned about your loaded weight. That's a HEAVY camper for SRW truck. Get your front/rear loaded axle weights! Then you can look into wheel and tire options.
17s are popular for the taller tire sidewall profile. But tire availability and required weight capacity may dictate your...
Ford (2006+) V10 or 6.2L gassers are fairly bomb proof. Hemi seem to be hit an miss. Older GM V8s are solid. Stay away from high tech for low tech work. :)
I'd definitely get rid of the factory suspension regardless. It's terrible.
Carli makes great components. Deaver makes rear leaf springs. Get springs and shocks tuned for your actual travel weight. You'll love it.
Ditch the sway bars. Get 2.5" shocks (Fox, King or similar).
Your...
That's not a bad idea. We do carry a couple of the line caps. Potentially could cap the steering box if needed. Carrying extra fluid may be a good idea. Although we do try to limit how much extra stuff we carry.
XL80 lights are quality. It was rather difficult paying the price! Most money...
Absolutely! It is amazing how well it has held up. Looking forward to more adventures!
Hopefully our experience can help provide inspiration and ideas.
We have been extremely happy with our "boring work truck" Ford F250 Super Duty! It is the XL trim with factory options for enhancing capability and functionality (no luxury items). It's a Work Truck not a Jaguar (people seem to be confused these days on the differences).
Past videos to bring...
Believe we did use 4 AWG for the anderson connector pigtail. 1 AWG for the truck feed. But used flexible welding style wire. I have the parts list attached to one of the posts.
We put our 37s on when the truck had about 100 miles on it. I'm not sure we've ever run an entire tank empty (not towing or hauling). We did run empty for most of one tank and got 13.6mpg. Our lifetime average is 10.155mpg since new. We track every mile.
We towed our trailer with camper all...
Keep us posted on how they wear. I'm curious if our cupping/crowning issue was from the over inflation or a tire carcass design thing. They are a great tire and the best option until these new tire options. I'm glad to see HD truck tire options for 37s on 17s. Very cool.
Our rear axle weight is ~ 6,200lbs with the camper. And ~6,900lbs with the camper and trailer. The X-AT have been fantastic for durability on/off road. They have been having trouble with the tread crowning and cupping. This became noticeable after the dealer overinflated the tires (80psi)...
This video segment includes parts of Section 2 of the Idaho BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) from Yellow Pine to Boise (heading south). We mapped our own off road route from Boise to Ketchum Sun Valley Idaho.
This adventure includes hiking, mountain biking, hot springs and lakes! The most EPIC...
It seems those are quality shocks. But I don't have direct experience with them. Most of the shock performance is a combination of materials, size and tuning. Fox and King have earned their reputation from years of service. There's a bunch of newer options like Radflo, Icon, ADS. Any could...
It's easy to remove and test. For us... the benefits are both on and off road. You'll be surprised by how much sway the sway bar creates on uneven surfaces. Only real benefit is on smooth road to reduce leaning. But tuned suspension makes weight transfer more progressive and controlled...
This video segment includes parts of Section 2 of the Idaho BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) from Yellow Pine to Boise (heading south). We stray further from the planned route to incorporate additional destinations such as Hot Springs.
We purposefully don’t share the locations of hot springs...
