For 28 Large you should be able to get a killer low mile 100 or maybe a 200 without real high miles. Therefore engine rebuild should be a long ways off unless you have a long commute, in which case you better think twice about an unnecessary lift and bigger tires. Your MPG would drop from poor...
I like your camper. The chrome wheel combo looks more appropriate for the vintage in my opinion. Is the spare underneath? A smaller tire diameter would be better for power and handling without any real world sacrifice.
Isn't the 60 series the only one that says Land Cruiser on it? On top of that, it's really the best looking wheel I can recall. Don't really care for the looks of the old 40 and 55 steering wheels.
Hard to believe that there are more old school 4x4 fanatics in Japan than there are in the US. These basic, heavy duty 70 series trucks just reek of durability and machismo. What better place to sell them than the land of Rambo? Just look at how many piece of crap Humvees have been sold here...
Sounds like the ruination of a perfectly good truck. The resale value would basically vanish instantly. But what the heck, if it floats your boat then go for it.:)
I think you should drive the wheels of the 4Runner currently owned. The rust issues you've described really sound minor. I bet it could last a couple more decades before succumbing to anything serious. Buy a regular ground tent, throw it in the back and save all that money for the travels.

I gather it's being manufactured in Japan again, where it hasn't been built for quite some time. Only for one year, and only for domestic consumption. These SUVs and pickups are...
Normally I would say wool, especially in my Alaskan environment, but with this condition I'd go with down. Think dry, Alaskan interior in winter with temps around minus 40 and windy. And, I'd still freeze in short order.:)
About how many miles do you drive per year? If it's low, ya never should have bought a new rig in the first place. Do you really use the truck bed, or would more seating be better for your needs? A 2002 Montero with 66K would be the newest and lowest mileage rig I have ever owned, so it's not...
That's one reason the Hilux is better. American trucks are just too bloody big. (And I'm 6'5"). Another vote for a regular cab, manual transmission diesel.
