Q: What's the purpose of this part...?

Possibly a dumb question...but in the pictures below, what is the horizontal bar thingie that's on the side of these two boxes towards the rear? I assume it's for mounting something, but I can't find any photos of trucks that show anything mounted to them.

    Range hood vents

I agree that venting to the outside is clearly the ideal. What I'd like to know is how others are dealing with this matter in their expedition builds. I haven't noticed these typical RV-style vents on Earthroamers and other such rigs, but I assume they must be doing something to vent cooking...

    Range hood vents

Here are a couple examples of the typical RV vents out there: https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Vents-and-Fans/Ventline/V2009-01.html https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Vents-and-Fans/Ventline/V2111-03.html Here's a standard residential one that would maybe work better than the one linked above, as it has...

    Range hood vents

How do most people handle the issue of venting cooking odors to the outside? I've been looking at RV range hoods for my build, and while there seem to be plenty of fine options out there, I'm having a hard time finding a vent cover for the outside wall that doesn't scream "typical cheap RV...

what wood to install between frame and deck?

Thanks, Verkstad. Reason I ask, I'm having a flatbed with spring-mounted subframe installed on my FG by a commercial truck body builder, and they're of the mind that the wood is unnecessary. The Mitsubishi bodybuilder's guide makes no mention of it either, and clearly depicts the subframe laying...

what wood to install between frame and deck?

Maybe a dumb question, but I'm curious to know what exactly is the purpose of this wood (or other suitable material) between the chassis and subframe? Why is this preferable to just having the subframe lay directly on the chassis frame (i.e. nothing in between)?

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

Took it for a ride today, and yes, the exhaust brake definitely still seems to work as it should at this slightly more open setting. Everything is running great as far as I can tell, actually. But I can back off that exhaust brake set screw to where it was before, and start seeing smoke again...

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

Idled the engine for a while again today...zero smoke. I'm perplexed, but not unhappily so. Again, the only thing that's different is that the exhaust brake butterfly valve is now slightly more open when the brake is on. I guess I don't really *need* to understand why this eliminates the...

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

Seemingly good news: I let the engine idle for a while today, figuring if it's just excess condensation that needs to burn off, maybe it will do so and the smoke would eventually stop. Then I noticed that as soon as the exhaust brake turned off (after reaching operating temp), the smoke...

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

Not that I can see so far. If there is, it's *extremely* slow. No oil loss either. Previous owner had the oil changed right before I bought it early last year. I've probably only put around 200 miles on it since then, but the dipstick still reads right ********** on the full line. Could be I just...

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

Yeah, there's a thin bit of creamy stuff on the bottom of the outlet, and I also see a bit around the inside rim of the filler. I'm guessing this is not good news?

NPR 4wd conversion and camper build thread.

I just went with plain white, as my cab was white to begin with, and I wanted maximum forgiveness. Also, I knew there would inevitably be some of the OEM paint still visible inside the door thresholds, and didn't want to contrast with that too obviously. Here's a close-up. From 20 feet away, it...

NPR 4wd conversion and camper build thread.

Excellent. I painted my cab with Monstaliner early last year, and it turned out great. Highly recommended.

    Smoke from valve cover breather?

I noticed some white/gray smoke coming out of the end of my crankcase breather hose the other day (driver's side, just inward from the clutch power cylinder). It's not spewing or anything like that -- more like the amount you'd expect to see if a little spilled oil was burning off an exhaust...

Air leak on bottom of turbocharger

Fixing it definitely sounds like more trouble than it's worth. Thanks again for the help.

Air leak on bottom of turbocharger

Thanks for the insight. I removed the pin and actuator rod this morning, but couldn't get that piece that goes into the housing to come out. Didn't want to force it without more info. Any idea how that's secured in there? The bushing does look okay all the way around from the outside at least.

Air leak on bottom of turbocharger

While doing a coolant drain/flush/fill this afternoon, I noticed a decent amount of air coming out of the bottom of my turbocharger (2004 FG649), right where the actuator arm goes into the unit. The black soot in the photo below tells the story. Anyone ever deal with a leak here before? The shop...

    DAF T244

Beautiful work. I never considered Dibond before, but it looks like a great option. How did you deal with seams between panels that don't happen to fall on corners? Looks like one long sheet from here, but I'm guessing it's not?

Rethinking the need for a torsion-free subframe...

SkiFreak -- thanks for the insights. Interesting to hear of the evidence of stress you saw in those service trucks, but without the benefit of knowing their history, it's hard to know how meaningful of a datapoint this is. Commercial non-owner/drivers very likely treat these trucks with a lot...
